Notre Dame football: Bowl could act as tryout for young Irish QBs

ORLANDO, Fla. - It is not just because Rod Gilmore was once on the?wrong end of a miracle - but a miracle, nonetheless -?that makes him a?believer.

It?s that Stanford, Gilmore?s alma mater, keeps flashing the template that shows not only is it possible for Notre Dame?s present someday to match its rich history, but that the Cardinal provide the mechanics of a re-ascendance to the national elite, as well.

?Twenty-three wins in two years and sitting on a possible 24th and two BCS appearances,? said Gilmore, the color analyst assigned by ESPN to work Notre Dame?s Champs Sports Bowl matchup Thursday night against 25th-ranked Florida State.

?And Stanford?s academic standards are a little bit more stringent than Notre Dame?s,? Gilmore continued. ?They can?t recruit the same great pool that a lot of other places can. But if Stanford can do it, I can?t see any reason that Notre Dame can?t. Academics reasons should not hold them back from it.

?I think what?s important, you figure out ? as Jim Harbaugh and David Shaw and Denny Green and Bill Walsh did ? the style of play that really works for you. And you recruit to that, and you get some buy-in from the university on that, and you?ve got to scour the country.?

If any of that actually materializes in large doses in the Florida Citrus Bowl stadium on Thursday night, Gilmore might be the most surprised person in the house. But he wants and expects to see hints of where the Irish program is heading.

?I believe next year is a critical year for Notre Dame and for Brian Kelly,? Gilmore said.

It starts, of course, with the Irish quarterback situation. The well-worn script has Kelly announcing sophomore Tommy Rees as the starter against the Seminoles, eight days after benching him at halftime of a 28-14 loss at Stanford on Nov. 26.

What?s intriguing is how that ? and the weeks leading up to it ? play on the national stage, which is where Gilmore comes in.

?That?s the million dollar question, isn?t it?,? Gilmore said of what the Rees/Andrew Hendrix/Everett Golson/perhaps Gunner Kiel saga looks like from the outside looking in.

?I?ve watched Brian Kelly for a number of years now, and it just seems to me that he?s always been demanding. But I sense a certain amount of frustration with him and the quarterback play that I haven?t seen with him over the last few years.?

And with good reason. ND?s team pass-efficiency rating falls in the 50s nationally among the 120 FBS schools for the second year in a row. In Kelly?s three years at Central Michigan, there was a steady progression ? from 67th to 58th to 29th, even though he had to break in a redshirt freshman as a new starter, Dan LeFevour, in year 3 (2006).

At Cincinnati, the Bearcats had two top-10 finishes in passing efficiency nationally under Kelly during his three years there. The year they didn?t (2008), they played five quarterbacks due to injuries, three of whom made at least a couple of starts. Even then, UC was 32nd, 21 spots ahead of where ND is this season. And UC reached the BCS that season.

?He?s used to having quarterback play at a high level, and doing exactly what he wants,? Gilmore said. ?And you can see he?s frustrated that he hasn?t been able to get that yet at Notre Dame. I don?t know that it?s an issue of athleticism, because Tony Pike (at Cincinnati) was not the most athletic quarterback you?d see running the zone read.

?But I think it?s just being on the same page with him ? taking care
of the football, understanding priorities, that sort of thing. He?s
been frustrated by it and I expect the game to kind of be a tryout,
and I expect next spring to be a tryout.

?Golson should be in the mix, and if they get the kid, Kiel, I would
imagine he?d be in the mix. And I think that?s the biggest question
mark for Notre Dame and for Brian. They?ve been unsettled at that
spot.?

Defensively, Gilmore gravitates to junior linebacker Manti Te?o and
the gaggle of phenoms working the defensive line. But he wonders if
the scheme is too soft for that talent.

?They need to be more aggressive, in my opinion,? he said. ?That?s not
their style of play right now. They tend to be a little bit more of a
zone coverage, bend-but-don?t-break type of defense.?

Gilmore hadn?t worked his way yet to the Irish special teams, but he
won?t see anything on film that can duplicate what he witnessed on
Nov. 20, 1982 from the Stanford sideline.

We?re talking about an occurrence on the field so unlikely and so
spectacular that three decades later the Cal kickoff return is still
referred to simply as, ?The play.?

More accurate view of George Washington crossing debuts at the New-York Historical Society

NEW YORK (AP).- One of America's most famous images, a painting of George Washington crossing the Delaware River, got much of the story wrong: The American commander wouldn't have stood triumphantly on a rowboat in daylight, but on a ferry bracing himself against a fierce snowstorm on Christmas night. That's the historic scene depicted in a new painting that goes on display this week at the New-York Historical Society museum in Manhattan. "No one in his right mind would have stood up in a rowboat in that weather," artist Mort Kunstler said. "It would have capsized." He told The Associated Press that he's "not knocking the original" ? the well-known 1851 painting by German-born artist Emanuel Leutze, who Kunstler says "was glorifying ...

San Francisco Hood Cleaning Pro Says College Town Restaurants Should Prepare Now for the Crowds

PLACENTIA AND RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA - Restaurant owners and operators in college towns need to prepare for the spike in business, says one Placentia and Anaheim hood cleaning business owner.

It's also time for campus dining facilities to have their kitchen hoods inspected, says Massoud Farazandeh, chief executive officer of American Professional Services (APS-Hoods), who also is a hood sales expert.

"We tell restaurant owners to call professionals to clean their kitchen systems before the onslaught of business," says Farazandeh. "More students means increased cooking volume, which could cause problems if grease buildup already exists in the system."

Built up grease could act as fuel if a fire broke out, he says. Follow these tips to find a quality range hood cleaning company:
? Ask what inspection/cleaning standards the company follows.
? Ask for details on what cleaning services are included.
? Ask for proof of licenses, insurance and certifications.
? Ask for a report after the cleaning or inspection that shows what was done and points out deficiencies/repairs to make.
? Ask for references.

Once a qualified company is selected, the company should recommend a routine cleaning schedule.
Most companies recommend schedules according to the type and volume of food cooked. Some guidelines include:
? Restaurants that cook with smokehouses or wood fires- clean systems monthly.
? Restaurants that use charbroilers, fryers or cook with large volumes of vegetable oils- clean systems quarterly at a minimum.
? No restaurant should go longer than six months between cleanings.

Game Informer is back to its teasing ways. Last month, the magazine?s staffers somewhat hyped up last month?s issue by saying the January cover ?may be the most surprising of the year?. This turned out to be South Park: The Game.

This time around the folks over at Game Informer believe that the developer behind their upcoming reveal will be shocking. When asked if fans could potentially guess the mystery game, editor-in-chief Andy McNamara said on Twitter:

?I think you could (though it?s not announced), but doubtful you would get the real nuts which is the developer.?

He added, ?I can pretty much promise not many will see this one coming?.

We?re quite a ways away from the announcement.?McNamara confirmed that they?ll be showing Game Informer?s next cover on January 5.

Bosnian police detain female war crimes suspect (AP)

BANJA LUKA, Bosnia-Herzegovina ? A Bosnian Serb woman suspected of such brutal crimes against non-Serbs during the 1990s that her victims called her the "Female Monster" has been detained, police and local media reported Wednesday.

It was a rare arrest in that relatively few women have been linked to the atrocities of that era.

Halid Emkic, the spokesman for the police in the northern Bosnian town of Brcko, told The Associated Press that the woman's initials were M.I. But Bosnian media identified the suspect as Monika Ilic, a native of Brcko, whose once-childlike appearance is alleged to have hid a cruel disposition.

Ilic was reportedly 18 when she married Goran Jelisic, a convicted murderer and concentration camp torturer. The two allegedly committed crimes against imprisoned non-Serbs in Brcko at the beginning of the 1992-95 Bosnian war.

Jelisic, who called himself the "Serb Adolf" after Adolf Hitler, was sentenced in 2001 to 40 years in jail by the U.N. war crimes tribunal. But Monika Ilic evaded justice for years, apparently living in Serbia under a false name for a time.

Following an international warrant, police tracked her down Tuesday in Prijedor, Bosnia, where her current boyfriend, Nebojsa Stojanov, lives. Stojanov has told the Banja Luka magazine "Reporter" that his girlfriend was not married to Jelisic but was in fact one of his victims.

Ilic is expected to face investigators on Wednesday and to have a lawyer appointed for her.

She joins just a handful of women who have been accused of or stood trial for war crimes in Bosnia.

The most prominent one ? and the only former resident of the famous Sheveningen detention unit attached to the U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague ? is a former member of the wartime Bosnian Serb leadership, Biljana Plavsic.

As one of the creators of the Serb ministate in Bosnia during the 1992-95 war, she was sentenced by the tribunal in 2003 of persecution, a crime against humanity, as part of an ethnic cleansing campaign to drive Bosniaks and Croats out of Serb-controlled areas of Bosnia.

Plavsic was released after serving two-thirds of her 11-year sentence and settled in Belgrade.

Azra Basic, a soldier of the Bosnian Croat forces, emigrated to the U.S. after the war and was detained in Kentucky in March at the request of Bosnian authorities. She is accused of killing a prisoner and torturing others by forcing them to drink human blood and gasoline and having them kneel on broken glass.

A U.S. court is still considering whether there is enough evidence against her to justify an extradiction.

A few years ago, Monika Ilic's brother, Konstantin Simonovic, was sentenced to six years for crimes committed as commander of the notorious camp "Luka" where both Ilic and Jelisic are alleged to have operated.

Several witnesses told Bosnian media Ilic looked like a little girl but was notoriously cruel.

Former Luka camp prisoner Amir Mujic alleged in a video statement shown by the daily Dnevni Avaz web portal that he was in the room when Ilic took a broken beer bottle and ripped an inmate's stomach open.

'Star Wars: The Old Republic' speaks for itself (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? It's something that players of modern single-player video games like "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" and "Batman: Arkham City" might take for granted, but an effect that die-hard fans of sprawling online role-playing games such as "World of Warcraft" and "Aion" will surely appreciate: The characters in "Star Wars: The Old Republic" can actually speak.

With more than 320 actors portraying more than 4,000 characters with 260,000 lines of dialogue, BioWare's "The Old Republic" is poised to feature more voice acting than any other massively multiplayer online game in the galaxy when it launches Tuesday, and that's not even counting the thousands of beeps and boops sputtered by droids predating R2-D2.

BioWare, the Electronic Arts Inc. developer behind the "Mass Effect" and "Dragon Age" single-player franchises, has become synonymous with conversational gameplay that allows players to chat with other characters in the hope of unlocking missions, learning more about the plot, demonstrating morality and even forming virtual bonds ? romantic or otherwise.

The developer is taking that virtual chatter online with "Old Republic," which is set thousands of years before Luke Skywalker battled Darth Vader in a galaxy far, far away. Unlike most other persistent multiplayer games, "Old Republic" is relying more on voices than written words to push its narrative forward with an unprecedented amount of spoken dialogue.

The highly anticipated "Old Republic" has already drawn comparisons to "World of Warcraft," the behemoth online fantasy game from Blizzard Entertainment that boasts more than 10 million subscribers but little voice work. ("Star Wars Galaxies," a "Star Wars" online game from Sony Online Entertainment, ended last week after eight years in operation.)

At the start of "Old Republic," players pledge allegiance to either the Republic or Empire and pick from eight character types: a bounty hunter like Boba Fett, a smuggler like Han Solo, a Jedi consular like Yoda, a Sith inquisitor like Darth Maul, a Jedi knight like Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Sith warrior like Darth Vader, an Imperial agent like Grand Moff Tarkin or a trooper.

The possibility of 16 different, highly customizable protagonists ? eight men, eight women ? hyper-speeding through a virtual universe populated with thousands of talkative characters, as well as millions of other players online, presented "The Old Republic" developers at BioWare in Austin, Texas, and LucasArts in San Francisco with several new challenges.

"When you're doing a game like `The Old Republic,' the acting is like cubism," said LucasArts voice director Will Beckman. "You have to see these characters from every angle and be able to pull it apart and put it back together. It's definitely a challenge for our voice actors. It's a unique type of acting that takes a tremendous amount of imagination."

Unlike an animated film, the nonlinear nature of "The Old Republic" requires the voice actors to record several different versions of dialogue, depending on whether players are moving along the light or dark sides of the Force, and because the game is ongoing, the developers are creating updates that will feature new content, including voiceovers.

"We tried to prepare the talent that this isn't a normal voiceover gig," said LucasArts voice producer Orion Kellogg. "Normally, actors come into the studio once or twice to record their audio. We've got 16 player characters alone doing tons of dialogue. They know they're coming back. I think they like it because they've been able to grow into their role."

"Party of Five" actress Lacey Chabert is among the hundreds of voices within "The Old Republic" universe. Chabert plays a spunky slicer named Mako, who serves as a companion to players who choose to become a bounty hunter. Chabert, who has voiced dozens of animated characters, said the most challenging part of this role was tackling the sci-fi vocabulary.

"The language within the `Star Wars' universe is filled with words that I did not know how to pronounce," said Chabert. "Luckily, the producers have an audio library of planet names and everything `Star Wars' and how it should actually be pronounced. I always had to listen to a reference, and I'd almost always get it wrong the first time."

Besides the English, German or French spoken in the game, "Old Republic" features 21 different alien languages. While the sounds of species like the furry Wookies came directly from the LucasArts archives, Beckman said he crafted several new alien languages, finding inspiration from existing and dead real-world languages, as well as audio effects.

"It's a combination of having some idea of where you want to go with it, creating a base language from existing or dead languages, then creating a personality or style for that language and executing it with sound design," said Beckman, who also speaks Huttese as blubbery gang leader Nem'ro the Hutt ? among other alien creatures ? in "The Old Republic."

The daunting amount of dialogue also technically tested "The Old Republic" developers. They built a new system for organizing the audio, which was recorded in 17 different studios spanning from Los Angeles to London, and created a method of compressing the audio so that it can be easily downloaded by players when they install and update the game.

Visually, when players are gabbing away, a glowing conversation cartoon bubble appears over their avatar's head. When they team up with fellow Republic or Empire devotees and engage in conversations, each player elects a response, but what's actually uttered is randomly selected, and players who win the chance to speak earn extra points.

"It is a big game, and it's going to feel like that when players are installing it," said BioWare audio producer Sandee Valle. "More importantly, it's going to feel like that when you get out there and start exploring the world. Hopefully, we're going to be adding to the game regularly with new content and voice work for many, many years to come."

Recession Hurt Parent-Child Ties, Survey Finds (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Dec. 15 (HealthDay News) -- The recent recession took a toll on parent-child ties, with parents who were under financial strain reporting that they felt less connected to their kids and kids saying they were less likely to act with generosity, a new study finds.

Researchers from University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Brigham Young University analyzed data from a survey done in 2009 and then again a year later of about 500 families in the Seattle area about their feelings of depression, economic stress and family relationships.

The families were mostly white, middle- to upper-middle-class and college educated. The children were young adolescents, aged 10 to 14.

From one year to the next, parents who reported increasing financial pressure were also more likely to report symptoms of depression, according to the study. In turn, depressed parents were more likely to report feeling less connected and less close with their child.

Likewise, parental financial strain and depression also affected the children. Children whose parents were struggling were less likely to say they volunteered, helped their friends or their families, found enjoyment in doing small favors for others, or tried to cheer up people who were feeling blue -- a group of positive behaviors researchers call "pro-social behaviors."

"The effects of the economic strain are present and having an impact on families that we consider middle-class and upper-middle-class," said lead study author Gustavo Carlo, currently a professor of human development and family studies at the University of Missouri. "These are families you'd think maybe aren't feeling the effects of the economic crisis in the way that other communities are, or that might have access to resources that other families might not have easy access to."

And the families interviewed were from the Seattle area, which wasn't even as hard hit during the downturn as other regions of the country, Carlo added. "One can only imagine how these effects are being felt by families in areas where the communities have really suffered tremendously from the economic situation," he said.

The study appears online and in the December print issue of the Journal of Research on Adolescence.

To be sure, not every parent experiencing economic strain will become anxious and depressed, said Velma McBride Murry, a professor of human and organizational development at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.

"If you enter this situation having an increased vulnerability to depression and anxiety, economic strain elevates it, or sets it off to where you are more likely to experience greater devastation than people who are much more mentally stable," Murry said.

But the current study adds to a large body of evidence that cuts across income levels and racial and ethnic groups and shows that economic stress can have a "cascading effect" on the whole family, Murry said. When under financial stress, parents who are used to being able to give their children a cellphone or new clothes suffer mentally when they can no longer do so. As money worries mount -- they're not sure they can pay the mortgage, or the utility bill, or a medical expense that comes in -- parents can become overwhelmed, irritable, short-tempered, depressed and withdrawn.

"Then it erodes communication in the family, and reduces the connectedness that parents have with their children," Murry said.

The kids feel it, too, and their attitudes and behavior can also suffer. Prior research has shown that the kids aren't bothered by the loss of the material goods -- the new cellphone or the clothes -- but by the impact it's having on their family, she added.

"Prior studies have found that kids will say, 'it's not the stuff that I miss. I miss my relationship with my parents. That has shifted and the environment in my family has shifted,'" Murry said.

Parents who are feeling economically strained and depressed should seek out emotional support, whether it's from family and friends, their church or from a mental health professional, Carlo urged.

"They may have to pay some extra attention to work on the quality of the relationship with their child," he said.

XBox 360 Update Takes Aim at Apple, Google TV (ContributorNetwork)

"The Future of TV Begins Now," according to a December 4 press release from Microsoft. The announcement goes over the proliferation of TV channels available, and offers a solution: Kinect voice search, on an XBox 360 with the latest dashboard update.

The update introduces a long list of XBox 360 apps, from content providers like ESPN and Netflix. Partners announced for early 2012 include HBO GO and Xfinity on Demand. The update is intended to turn the XBox 360 game console (with the Kinect attachment) into a hub for digital media viewing, allowing people to watch anything by asking for it by name.

Apple- and Google-branded set-top boxes designed to improve TV watching are already on the market; the Apple TV in Apple's case, and third-party machines like the Logitech Revue in Google's. But neither platform has gained widespread acceptance, and both lack features the XBox 360 now has:

Voice search and a simple UI

Like most Apple products, the Apple TV's user interface is simple and straightforward, and derived from the Front Row app that once powered Macs' media capabilities. But while Apple's new Siri feature allows for natural-language instructions to your device, so far it's only available on the new iPhone 4GS. Kinect voice search is on all XBox 360 consoles with the Kinect attachment, and the latest software update.

Most reviews of the Google TV set-top boxes, meanwhile, express dismay at how complex its interface is -- even after last month's Honeycomb update.

The networks' cooperation

Google TV ostensibly allows you to surf the web from your TV ... including the websites of major networks, many of which offer recent episodes of their shows online. But ABC, NBC, CBS, Hulu and Viacom properties like Comedy Central and MTV block Google TV boxes from watching their shows online, and thus skipping on most of the advertisements. Apple TV, meanwhile, is primarily tied into Netflix and iCloud, and isn't marketed as a way to enhance normal television watching.

The XBox 360's update offers participating content providers a way to bring their videos into XBox 360 owners' homes on demand, instead of through watching digital cable or broadcast TV. And so far, many have already signed up for it.

50+ million XBox 360 consoles

That's according to Edwin Kee of Ubergizmo, based on Microsoft's most recent quarterly report. So while Apple's treated its Apple TV as a "hobby," and Logitech's bowed out of the Google TV business after substantial losses, Microsoft already has a huge installed base for its console -- provided that most of the consoles it shipped, like the early ones plagued by the "Red Ring of Death," are still running.

Real Sociedad rallies to beat Malaga 3-2 in Spain

By JOSEPH WILSON

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:21 a.m. ET Dec. 5, 2011

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -For the second week running Real Sociedad scored late to snatch victory, beating Malaga 3-2 in dramatic fashion in the Spanish league on Sunday.

With Malaga on the verge of collecting its fourth victory in five games, Carlos Vela lifted the ball with a light touch of the head before whipping an acrobatic bicycle kick into the back of the net to equalize for the Basque side in the 89th minute.

Sociedad then pressed for the winner that came three minutes later from substitute Diego Ifran, who got past Malaga defender Martin Demichelis before coolly shooting past goalkeeper Willy Caballero to cap the unexpected comeback.

"In the last three minutes we showed our skill," Sociedad coach Philippe Montanier said. "I thought it would be very difficult to rally so late but it only takes 10 seconds to score, that along with patience and a cool head."

Sociedad had gone in front in the 10th minute at Anoeta stadium when Imanol Agirretxe's header hit the crossbar and bounced off Demichelis into the net.

But striker Jose Rondon muscled free of two defenders to head in Francisco "Isco" Alarcon's cross from inside the six-yard box to level for Malaga in the 21st.

Sebastian Fernandez stole the ball from defender Mikel Gonzalez inside the area and scored to make it 2-1 in the 59th, giving Malaga control until Sociedad caught the visitors off guard with its late surge.

Sociedad also won in stoppage time last week when Inigo Martinez's blast from halfway secured a 3-2 victory over Real Betis.

"I prefer to win being up 3-0 by halftime, but this league is very tough and almost every game is close," Montanier said.

Malaga's first loss in five rounds left it three points behind fourth-place Levante, while Sociedad continued its turnaround after three rounds without a loss.

Also Sunday, Radamel Falcao led Atletico Madrid to a 3-1 win over Rayo Vallecano for the team to stay undefeated at home in the league this season.

The Colombia striker played Gabi Fernandez through to score Atletico's 25th-minute opener, before heading in Diego's cross in the 74th for his eighth league goal of the campaign.

"Of course for a striker it is good to score," said Falcao. "But I can also bring other things to the team like my participation in the first goal and always trying to be a reference for my team up front."

Atletico's Eduardo Salvio capped the win in the Madrid derby with a third goal in added time before Gabi scored in his own net to give Rayo a deserved consolation goal.

In Pamplona, Javad Nekounam scored with a free kick in added time to lift Osasuna to a 2-1 win over Betis as his team stayed unbeaten at Reyno de Navarra stadium this season.

For the second straight week Betis conceded a winner with the 90 minutes completed. Pepe Mel's team has now lost nine of its last 10 games.

Athletic Bilbao was held to a 1-1 draw at Mallorca in the Basques' first game against former coach Joaquin Caparros since his departure in the offseason.

Striker Odion Ighalo's goal just before halftime gave Granada a 1-0 win over last-place Zaragoza, which has lost six of its last seven matches.

On Saturday, Madrid beat Sporting Gijon 3-0 to remain three points ahead of second-place Barcelona. The defending champion routed Levante 5-0 but has played one game more than Madrid.

The two rivals meet next weekend in the first "clasico" of the season at Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

Also, third-place Valencia beat Espanyol 2-1 to keep in touch with the top two, while Racing Santander edged Villarreal 1-0.

Sevilla hosts Getafe on Monday to close round 14.

25 die in Syria, as defectors battle regime forces (AP)

BEIRUT ? Violence sweeping across Syria killed 25 people on Saturday, most of them in a battle between troops and a growing force of army defectors who have joined the movement to oust the autocratic president, activists said. The Arab League, meanwhile, agreed on the details of economic and diplomatic sanctions against the regime.

The revolt against Bashar Assad's rule began with peaceful protests in mid-March, triggering a brutal crackdown. The unrest has steadily become bloodier as defectors and some civilians take up arms, prompting the United Nations' human rights chief to refer to it this week as a civil war and urge the international community to protect Syrian civilians.

Sanctions by the United States, the European Union, Turkey and the 22-member Arab League have so far failed to blunt the turmoil, but are leaving Assad's regime increasingly isolated.

Arab League ministers meeting in the Gulf nation of Qatar on Saturday to finalize the bloc's penalties agreed on a list of 19 Syrian officials subject to a travel ban. Among them are Cabinet ministers, intelligence chiefs and security officers, but the list does not include Assad.

Many of the Arab sanctions, which were first announced last Sunday, went into effect immediately, including cutting off transactions with the Syrian central bank, halting Arab government funding for projects in Syria and freezing government assets. Flights between Syria and its Arab neighbors will stop Dec. 15.

The Arab League also agreed to ban the supply of all weapons to Syria.

The worst violence on Saturday took place in the restive northwestern city of Idlib.

The pre-dawn clashes between regime forces and defectors killed seven soldiers and policemen, as well as five defectors and three civilians, according to a British-based group of Syrian activists called the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Elsewhere, security forces killed one civilian in the southern province of Daraa, six in the central region of Homs and three others in areas near Idlib, the observatory said.

The U.N.'s top human rights official said this week that Syria is in a state of civil war and that more than 4,000 people have been killed since March.

Until recently, most of the bloodshed in Syria was caused by security forces firing on mainly peaceful protesters, but there have been growing reports of army defectors and armed civilians fighting regime forces.

November was the deadliest month of the uprising, with at least 950 people killed in gunbattles, raids and other violence, according to activist groups.

In the west of the country, Syrian troops detained at least 27 people in the village of Talkalakh on the border with Lebanon and set fire to the homes of nine activists who were on the run, the observatory said.

Talkalakh is within walking distance from Lebanon, and at least two Lebanese civilians were struck by bullets on their side of the border on Friday. Witnesses said that they had heard hours of explosions and heavy machine-gun fire coming from the village.

The country's state-run SANA news agency confirmed the arrests in Talkalakh, saying that those detained were "terrorists" involved in smuggling weapons, drugs and bringing in fighters from Lebanon. The regime has consistently blamed armed gangs acting out a foreign conspiracy for Syria's unrest.

The opposition activists reject that and say they are pushing for Assad's ouster in hopes of breaking open the nation's closed political scene.

The reports of new violence could not be independently confirmed. The regime has sealed the country off from foreign journalists and prevented independent reporting.

Syria has refused to accept an Arab League proposal for ending the violence under which a team of Arab monitors would enter the country to ensure the government has halted its crackdown on protesters.

Arab League officials at Saturday's meeting in Qatar said Syria has asked for a meeting to discuss the proposed monitoring team with the league's secretary-general, Nabil Elaraby. But no date or venue for those talks was announced.

The league suspended Syria's membership in November.

Julia Plevin: Online Dating Without the Ick Factor

2011-12-03-Picture5.png

Maybe Blackbook365 just appeals to me because I'm as single as the shot of espresso in my soy latte, but I think this startup may be the most exciting new company I've seen in a long time.

Blackbook365 might be best described as Match.com meets The Sartorialist meets Gilt Groupe meets a group of Yentas. It's bespoke online dating with a side of highbrow editorial. Simple, innovative and filling a need in society.

The company has been in development since the summer and launched about two weeks ago, on Nov. 15, 2011, in New York City.

The founder, who's big in the New York City fashion scene and wants to remain anonymous for the time being, is herself married. But she got the idea for the company after chatting with a friend who kept having really disappointing online dating experiences.

They realized that the problem with online dating now is that there are so many guys on these sites that sorting through them all to find a decent one was almost a fulltime job. Since the women who rely on online dating the most seem to be the career-focused ones who have intense fulltime jobs, this is quite a dilemma.

Focus groups confirmed that, yes, it would be really cool if there were a way to cut through all the clutter and help women find just one really great guy. Turns out it's pretty hard for a woman to find a man who is successful, handsome, charming and most importantly -- commitment-oriented (no kidding!).

I don't mean to be all on my feminist high horse. I'm sure there is an equivalent problem for guys and Blackbook365 takes that into consideration. They will start featuring women in early 2012. And while the company launched in NYC, they have big plans to roll out in 26 cities next year. Dallas and Chicago are coming next and San Francisco and Los Angeles will follow soon after.

So how exactly does it work? It costs about $340 to be featured for one day on the website (price will vary with location). When compared with the monthly subscription fees for other online dating sites, the price is actually quite reasonable. Considering the Blackbook365 team spends about an hour with each featured individual and a professional photo shoot is part of the deal, it's quite the steal... especially if matches are made.

And hopefully matches will be made! It's a personalized matchmaking service, after all. Interested women sign up for the website and create a profile free of charge. They then have the option to contact the featured guy with a calling card that contains a personal message.

Once all the cards are collected, the Blackbook365 team puts together a list of the best matches based on the guy's wants. It's on the guy to start corresponding, but Blackbook365 is there to hold his hand. They have connections to all the hot new spots in the city and can help him set up a date and get exclusive reservations.

Soon Blackbook365 will start hosting cocktail parties and dinners. The team meets enough savvy singles that they can start to say, "Oh, she'd be great for him" and vice versa.

If it all sounds a bit like Fiddler on the Roof, be warned. There are actually plans to create a J Blackbook section of the website for Jewish singles as the company grows (hence the Yenta reference).

It's only been running for two weeks, so it's still too early to know if any matches have been made. But so far there are 60 guys lined up to be featured and about 40 calling cards sent in each day. This without any marketing efforts.

I was assured that Blackbok365 isn't trying to marry people off, just focusing on men who are ready to settle down. Sounds one and the same to me. But I'm intrigued and eagerly awaiting Blackbook365's arrival to San Francisco.

No. 21 Clemson stuns No. 5 Virginia Tech 38-10 (AP)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? Tajh Boyd threw three touchdown passes and ran for another as No. 21 Clemson routed No. 5 Virginia Tech 38-10 Saturday night to win its first Atlantic Coast Conference championship in 20 years.

The Tigers (10-3) clinched their first Orange Bowl berth since 1981, the year they won their only national championship. Clemson won't be playing for a national title this season, but the victory was still sweet considering they'd lost three of four games to close the regular season.

"We knocked down a lot of walls tonight," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said.

Clemson became the only team to beat Virginia Tech (11-2) twice in the same season. The Tigers beat the Hokies 23-3 in Blacksburg, Va., on Oct. 1.

The second half was all Clemson.

Clemson scored three touchdowns on five plays in a span of 4:24 in the third quarter to break open a 10-10 tie at halftime.

After Virginia Tech went three-and-out on its first second half possession, Boyd capped a 10-play, 87-yard touchdown drive with his second touchdown pass of the game to tight end Dwayne Allen for a 17-10 lead.

On Clemson's next play from scrimmage, wide receiver Sammy Watkins got behind the defense and hauled in a 53-yard touchdown pass from Boyd ? his 31st of the season, extending his own school record. Boyd completed 20 of 29 passes for 240 yards and was named the game's most valuable player.

Andre Ellington, who ran for 125 yards, raced 29 yards for a touchdown to give the Tigers a 31-10 lead. Boyd put the game away early in the fourth quarter on a quarterback sneak.

"Our team, I could sense the confidence growing," Swinney said. "I told them if you just put it together on offense, defense and special teams, it won't be close, I don't care who we play."

Similar to the first matchup, the Hokies could get nothing going against a stingy Tigers defense, which knocked away nine passes.

Virginia Tech tailback David Wilson, the ACC's player of the year, was a non-factor, held to 36 yards on 11 carries.

Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas had a rough night, fumbling on the team's first play from play from scrimmage leading to Boyd's first touchdown pass to Allen and an early 7-0 lead for Clemson.

Late in the game, down 28 points, Thomas threw into the end zone and was picked off by Bashaun Breeland, who returned it 64 yards to set off a wild celebration. Clemson fans, sitting behind the team's bench, began bombarding the field with oranges.

It was one of those nights for the Hokies, who failed in their bid to win their fourth ACC title in five years.

Even when something went well for the Hokies, it quickly backfired.

After falling behind by 21, Jarrett Boykin hauled in a 29-yard pass from Thomas deep in Clemson territory. But Boykin was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct when the spiked the ball, drawing a 15-yard penalty. Four plays later, the Hokies turned it over on downs.

Thomas' fumble proved to be a foreshadowing of things to come.

On their first offensive play of the game, Tigers linebacker Stephone Anthony jarred the ball loose from Thomas on a keeper and defensive end Andre Branch recovered at Virginia Tech 25.

It was Clemson's first takeaway in its last four games.

The Tigers capitalized three plays later on when Allen hauled in a 24-yard touchdown pass from Boyd.

"It was one of those games where things didn't happen right," said Hokies coach Frank Beamer.

Watchdog: Fannie, Freddie abuses went unchecked (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A government watchdog said Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac improperly foreclosed on homeowners and cost the government billions of dollars by not holding major banks to strict underwriting requirements.

The report released Tuesday also said the Federal Housing Finance Agency gave "undue deference" to Fannie and Freddie officials and didn't scrutinize more than $35 million in bonuses and compensation to Fannie and Freddie executives.

FHFA's inspector general had previously released each of the findings on an individual basis. But the semi-annual report to Congress sketched a portrait of abuse at the two mortgage giants that the government failed to stop.

Fannie, Freddie and the FHFA didn't respond to the report. But they have responded to similar allegations in previous reports.

Fannie and Freddie own or guarantee about half of U.S. mortgages, or nearly 31 million loans. The Bush administration seized control of the mortgage giants in September 2008.

Like banks, the mortgage giants relaxed lending standards during the housing boom and didn't thoroughly check incomes and assets weren't properly checked. High-interest loans, some with low "teaser" rates, were doled out to risky borrowers.

The inspector general report found that Fannie and Freddie did not force banks to repurchase mortgages when they failed to meet strict underwriting requirements. That decision cost the government billions of dollars.

When a senior examiner at FHFA raised "serious concerns" about Freddie' process for reviewing Bank of America's mortgages, senior Freddie managers disagreed, according to the report. The managers also said they feared losing business from Bank of America if the government became more aggressive in getting money back for bad mortgages, the report said.

The report also found:

? Fannie knew about allegations of improper foreclosure practices by law firms as far back as 2003 but did not act to stop them.

? Fannie failed to establish an "acceptable and effective" way to monitor foreclosure proceedings between 2006 and early 2011.

? FHFA failed to oversee the government's signature foreclosure-prevention program, the Home Affordable Modification Program. As a result, it cost the government extra time and resources to fix it.

Fannie officials said they told a government official about false foreclosure practices in 2006. That unnamed official, who now works for Fannie's regulator, the Federal Housing Finance Agency, said he couldn't recall the conversation, the report said.

And both mortgage giants have defended executive bonuses and compensation as necessary to keep talented officials.
