Miami Cannibal Attack: Just the Beginning?

A terrifying Miami cannibal attack shocked the nation last weekend after a naked homeless man, 31-year-old Rudy Eugene, was found eating the face off 65-year-old victim, Ronald Poppo. A police officer was forced to fatally shoot Eugene.

The story has received tremendous coverage and triggered talk if a zombie apocalypse.

Poppo has amazingly survived the grisly attack by Rudy Eugene but is in critical condition, and reportedly only has his mustache and goatee intact on his face.

Ronald Poppo Mug ShotRudy Eugene Mug Shot

Detectives believe Eugene had been high on bath salts, which can become toxic and lead to psychosis if inhaled or injected, rather than used for aromatherapy.

While this is by far the craziest, other incidents around the U.S. this month have led conspiracy theorists to suggest a "zombie apocalypse" is indeed upon us.

In fact, between May 16 and Saturday, look at what happened:

  • On May 16, students and teachers at a Florida high school had to be quarantied after breaking out in a mysterious rash, the Huffington Post reports.
  • On May 21, a Bellwood, Illinois, man was arrested after allegedly biting an 18-year-old woman's cheek, according to MySuburbanLife.com.
  • On May 23, a Spring Valley, Calif., man was arrested for allegedly biting the tip off of his cousin's nose off, according to NBC San Diego.
  • On May 26, a Florida anesthesiologist allegedly banged his head against the inside of a cop car until he started bleeding following a DUI arrest. He then proceeded to allegedly spit blood in a police officer's face, according to ABC News.

Rudy Eugene's devouring of Ronald Poppo remains by far the most horrifying and gory, but it makes you wonder when the next bizarre incident will occur.

Supervolcanoes evolve superquickly

Huge underground magma chambers appear and erupt within just several hundred years

Web edition : 5:31 pm

The biggest eruptions on Earth may happen faster than volcanologists had thought. Giant blobs of magma appear underground and then pour onto the surface within centuries, suggests a new study of a California supereruption.

If the work holds true for other volcanoes, it means the most powerful eruptions don?t have magma chambers beneath them for very long. So if big changes start happening, like the ground rising or new geysers spouting, volcanologists might expect an eruption sooner rather than later. Yellowstone, for one, experienced a supereruption about 2.1 million years ago.

?The fact that at Yellowstone there?s no giant magma body right now doesn?t mean that in hundreds to thousands of years we couldn?t have one,? says Guilherme Gualda, a geologist at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. ?By understanding these time scales better, we know better what to expect.?

Gualda and his colleagues report the discovery May 30 in PLoS ONE.

The researchers studied 760,000-year-old rocks from Long Valley in eastern California. These rocks, known as the Bishop Tuff, formed during one of the biggest eruptions known, which spread some 600 cubic kilometers of ash and other debris across the landscape. Earlier studies, which looked at crystals such as zircon, suggested that the Bishop magma had sat underground, chemically evolving and slowly crystallizing for more than 100,000 years before erupting.

Gualda?s team looked instead at crystals of quartz. Certain properties of the quartz ? such as how much the element titanium migrated within it and how glass pieces within it grew rounder over time ? can indicate how long ago the quartz solidified within the liquid magma. That process would begin almost as soon as the magma body appears, the researchers? calculations showed. Once quartz forms, gas pressure builds up and eventually forces the magma to erupt.

Quartz would have crystallized less than 10,000 years before the eruption ? and usually more like 50 to 3,000 years, the team reports. The other studies that used zircon, and found a much older age, may represent a longer-term history of volcanism across the entire region, Gualda says.

Research at other supervolcanoes has shown how quickly an eruption can happen once magma starts moving toward the surface (SN: 3/10/12, p. 12). ?What we?re finding is that it wasn?t there for very long to begin with,? says Gualda.

The discovery supports the idea that magma can accumulate rapidly before supereruptions, says Erik Klemetti, a geologist at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, who has found similar fast changes in zircon crystals from New Zealand eruptions. Still, he says, ?this study really doesn?t address a key question ? just how do these large magma bodies initially form??

For now, Gualda is leaving that challenge to others. He is working to apply the new finding to other supervolcanoes to see whether they play by the same rules as Long Valley.

Night Shift Might Boost Women's Breast Cancer Risk: Study

MONDAY, May 28 (HealthDay News) -- Women who work the night shift more than twice a week might be increasing their risk for breast cancer, Danish researchers find.

Moreover, the risk appears to be cumulative and highest among women who describe themselves as "morning" people rather than "evening" people, the researchers say.

"About 10 to 20 percent of women in modern societies have night shift work," said lead researcher Johnni Hansen. "It might therefore be one of the largest occupational problems related to cancer."

Right now, the reasons for these findings are uncertain.

"Night shift work involves exposure to light at night, which decreases the production of the night hormone melatonin that seems to protect against certain cancers," said Hansen, of the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology at the Danish Cancer Society, in Copenhagen.

In addition, light at night might introduce circadian disruption, where the master clock in the brain becomes desynchronized from local cellular clocks in different body organs, affecting the breast, he said.

"Repeated phase shifting may lead to defects in the regulation of the circadian cell cycle, thus favoring uncontrolled growth," Hansen said.

Also, sleep deprivation after night shift work leads to the suppression of the immune system, which might increase the growth of cancer cells, he added.

This is not the first time this association has been recognized. In 2007 the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization, said that working the night shift is "probably carcinogenic to humans," according to background information in the study.

The new study was published in the May 28 online edition of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

To determine the effect of night shift work on the risk for breast cancer, Hansen's team collected data on more than 18,500 women who worked for the Danish Army between 1964 and 1999.

The researchers identified 210 women who had breast cancer and compared them to almost 900 similar women who did not have breast cancer.

All of the women were asked about their working patterns, lifestyles and other factors such as their use of contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy, and their sunbathing habits.

In addition, women were asked to classify themselves as "morning" or "evening" people.

In all, 141 women with breast cancer responded to the study questionnaires. In addition, 551 women who did not have breast cancer responded.

Among these women, the risk for breast cancer was increased 40 percent if they worked at night, the researchers found.

But for women who worked nights at least three times a week, and for at least six years, the risk was doubled, the findings showed.

Women who worked the night shift but who described themselves as morning people were at even higher risk of breast cancer. They were almost four times more likely to develop breast cancer as those who didn't work nights, according to the researchers.

In comparison, women who considered themselves evening people were twice as likely to develop breast cancer, they added.

Morning-preferring women who did not work at night had a lower overall risk of breast cancer than evening types, Hansen's team found.

"Since night shift work is unavoidable in modern societies, this type of work should be limited in duration and limited to less than three night shifts per week," Hansen said. "In particular, morning types should limit their night work," he added.

While the study found an association between night shift work and breast cancer, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Men who work at night may also be at risk for prostate cancer, Hansen noted. This evidence comes from three small studies, he said.

Dr. Stephanie Bernik, chief of surgical oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said that "it's very hard to single out the causes of breast cancer and whether women on the night shift have a higher risk."

But there appears to be some truth to this, she added.

"Stress increases the risk of breast cancer and affects the body as a whole, and working at night can throw off your circadian rhythm and cause stress," Bernik said.

"This is another finding that breast cancer is caused by a multitude of different environmental and genetic influences, so this is probably a piece of the puzzle," she added.

An expert on environmental factors that affect cancer, Richard Stevens, from the department of community medicine at the UConn Health Center in Farmington, Conn., said that "the evidence is growing rapidly about light at night and, specifically, shift work and breast cancer."

"But, this is the first study about the morning/evening preference," he noted.

"If it's true that light at night increases the risk of disease, then there are very practical implications," Stevens said.

If lighting is really an issue in night work, it is known which wavelengths suppress melatonin the most, and lighting could be adjusted to eliminate those wavelengths, he explained.

There are other things people can do to avoid the effects of light at night on health, he added.

"For example, for health in general, if you wake up during the night, stay in the dark; don't turn on the light. If you turn on the lights it will start suppressing melatonin immediately," Stevens said.

"There is a lot more involved than melatonin, but it's a good marker if your circadian rhythm is being changed," he said.

Studies are ongoing on the risk of night work and prostate cancer, Stevens noted.

Diabetes drug could be a promising therapy for traumatic brain injury

ScienceDaily (May 29, 2012) ? TAU research finds that existing diabetes medication may ease damage caused by brain-addling explosions.

Although the death toll is relatively low for people who suffer from traumatic brain injury (TBI), it can have severe, life-long consequences for brain function. TBI can impair a patient's mental abilities, impact memory and behavior, and lead to dramatic personality changes. And long-term medical treatment carries a high economic cost.

Now, in research commissioned by the United States Air Force, Prof. Chaim Pick of Tel Aviv University's Sackler Faculty of Medicine and Dr. Nigel Greig of the National Institute of Aging in the US have discovered that Exendin-4, an FDA-approved diabetes drug, significantly minimizes damage in TBI animal models when administered shortly after the initial incident. Originally designed to control sugar levels in the body, the drug has recently been found effective in protecting neurons in disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.

Prof. Pick's collaborators include his TAU colleagues Dr. Vardit Rubovitch, Lital Rachmany-Raber, and Prof. Shaul Schreiber, and Dr. David Tweedie of the National Institute of Aging in the US. Detailed in the journal Experimental Neurology, this breakthrough is the first step towards developing a cocktail of medications to prevent as much brain damage as possible following injury.

Diabetes medication to halt trauma

Prof. Pick has been researching TBI for many years, beginning with the effects of everyday injuries such as hitting the windshield in a car accident. As a result of his work for the Air Force, he has expanded his research to include trauma sustained when a person is exposed to an explosion, such as during a terrorist attack.

TBI causes long-term damage by changing the chemistry of the brain. During an explosion, increased pressure followed by an intense vacuum shakes the fluid inside the brain and damages the brain's structure. This damage cannot be reversed, but mapping the injury through behavioral and physical tests is crucial to understanding and quantifying the damage and forming a treatment plan through therapy or medication.

Prof. Pick and his colleagues designed a pre-clinical experiment that exposed mice to controlled explosions from 23 and 33 feet away, and then analyzed the resulting injuries. They also studied the effect of Exendin-4 as an additional parameter in minimizing brain damage.

The researchers divided their mice into four groups: a control group; a second group that was exposed to the blast without medication; a third group that received the medication but was not exposed to the blast; and a fourth group, exposed to the explosion but given the medication within an hour after the blast and continuing for seven days afterwards. The mice were placed under anesthesia before the explosion.

Behavioral and physical tests showed that the mice that had been exposed to the blast had severely impaired brain function compared to the control group. However, the mice that had also received the Exendin-4 treatment were almost on a par with the control group in terms of brain function, proving that Exendin-4 significantly reduced the long-term damage done by an explosion. In separate experiments, the drug was also associated with an improved outcome in mice who sustained TBI by blunt force.

Finding the ideal drug cocktail

Prof. Pick says this promising discovery can help researchers find the ideal combination of medications to minimize the lasting impact of TBI. "We are moving in the right direction. Now we need to find the right dosage and delivery system, then build a cocktail of drugs that will increase the therapeutic value of this concept," he explains. He adds that in treating such traumatic injuries, one drug is unlikely to be sufficient.

This work was also done in collaboration with Dr. Bruce Citron from the American Veterans Association and Dr. Barry Hoffer from the National Institute of Drug Abuse at the National Institute of Health.

After decade in storage, Washington letter on religious freedom will go public
Alex Zuckerman ("CNN," May 23, 2012)

Washington, USA ? After sitting in storage for nearly a decade, George Washington?s signature statement on religious liberty will go on display this summer in the city where freedom of religion was enshrined in the Constitution: Philadelphia.

America?s first president wrote the letter to a Jewish congregation in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1790, assuring American Jews that their freedom of religion would be protected. The document will go on display this summer for the first time since 2002 in an exhibition at Philadelphia?s National Museum of American Jewish History.

For nine years, the letter has been kept out of public view, in storage at a sterile Maryland office park a few hundred feet from FedEx Field, where the Washington Redskins play. CNN took an inside look at the document in September.

But the Morris Morgenstern Foundation, which owns the letter, has agreed to put the historic document on public display, officials at the National Museum of American Jewish History said.

?Our institution as well as others have been trying to have access to (this) for a long time,? said museum director and CEO Ivy Barsky. ?We feel fortunate that the Morgenstern Foundation thought us worthy.?

The loan agreement between the museum and the foundation is unusual. The museum will have the letter for three years but will be allowed to show it for just three months per year. The letter will be kept in a dark storage area for preservation for the other nine months.

The document will be accompanied by an exhibit called ?To Bigotry No Sanction: George Washington and Religious Freedom,? which will run June 29 to September 30. Barsky said the exhibit came together only after the museum was certain it could showcase Washington?s letter.

Before going into storage in 2002, the letter was on display at the Klutznick Museum at B?nai B?rith International Headquarters in Washington. It was on display there for 45 years before the organization downsized, closing its museum. The letter went into storage.

After that, many people did not realize where the letter had gone, according to Jane Eisner, editor of Forward, a Jewish newspaper. Eisner dedicated a series of editorials over the last year to lobbying for public display of the letter. She also sent a reporter, Paul Berger, to research the history of the letter.

?This is one of those rare moments as a journalist where you can see the fruits of your labor,? Eisner said. ?All we had was all Washington had, which was words. We just have our words and arguments that we try to put out in the public sphere as best we could.?

The letter is considered to be Washington?s key public statement on religious freedom. Eisner and Barsky say that the document signaled a welcoming of all people to America in pursuit of freedom.

?May the father of all mercies scatter light, and not darkness, upon our paths,? the letter reads, ?and make us all in our several vocations useful here, and in His own due time and way everlastingly happy.?

The letter addressed the congregation?s fears that Jews could face discrimination in the new nation. ?The letter starts off to the Hebrew congregation of Newport, Rhode Island,? said Mordechai Eskovitz, rabbi of the Touro Synagogue in Newport. ?It was meant for the congregation. It is addressed to the congregation.?

The Library of Congress had asked to display the letter during a 2004 exhibit on the 350th anniversary of Jewish life in America. When the loan was not completed, many historians speculated that no one would be able to meet the standards of the Morgenstern Foundation for exhibiting the letter.

?Usually people would die just to be invited to display their property,? said Jonathan Sarna, professor at Brandeis University and a pre-eminent scholar on Jewish-American history. ?If the Library of Congress wanted something of mine, they would have it the next day with insured mail.?

Berger, the Forward reporter, says the letter?s placement at another Jewish museum could mean the Morgenstern family would like to see the letter stay in a Jewish facility. ?Nobody knows why the family chose the museum in Philadelphia over the Library of Congress,? he said.

The Morgenstern Foundation did not respond to requests for comment.

It is unclear where the document will go after its three-year loan at the Museum of American Jewish History.

TechHive: iScore's baseball scorekeeping app for iOS

I like scoring baseball games. As nerdy admissions go, it?s not nearly embarrassing as the fact that I picked up the habit while playing in a Sports Illustrated Superstar Baseball dice-baseball league during my lunch hour in high school.

iScore in action.

These days, I will often bring a paper scorebook with me to the ballpark. Scoring a game focuses you on the game, gives you a quick-reference sheet for what?s happened previously, and provides a souvenir of your trip to the ballpark for later perusal. I?m not as obsessive about scoring as my colleague Philip Michaels, but I do enjoy it.

With the exception of people who I go to the ballpark with, I?ve kept this predilection of mine a secret. But my daughter is now playing her fifth year of organized softball, and someone?s got to score the games. Last year I experimented with scoring via Faster Than Monkeys?s $10 iScore Baseball on my iPad, and it worked pretty well.

This year, I?ve scored every game I?ve attended, and used the iScore Baseball app on my iPhone for most of them. The baseball-scorekeeping app world has improved greatly since Phil sat next to me at Spring Training 2010, attempting to keep score on his iPhone and swearing repeatedly as he got frustrated and his iPhone?s battery life dwindled. A combination of continual iScore Baseball improvements and my gradual understanding of how the app works has made me a believer in scoring using an iPhone. In fact, I?d say that any organized baseball or softball team above the fifth-grade level is cheating itself if it?s not scoring every game using an app like iScore Baseball.

Once you input rosters (which can be laborious at first, though once your team?s roster is saved, you can re-use it, and a Quick Lineup mode enters generic names for opposing players), scoring a game with iScore Baseball is simple. Essentially, the app interviews you about what just happened on the field. Tap Out to score an out, and it will ask you what sort of out was recorded. Tap Ground Out, and it?ll ask you to tap on the diamond to indicate where the ball was hit, and tap on the positions that recorded the out. If there are runners on base, it?ll then ask you if they advanced and if so, how.

In the background, the app is translating all that into proper baseball statistics. If you?ve got friends or family who want to follow the game remotely, iScore Baseball even feeds data to a webpage that shows a live, pitch-by-pitch view of the action. (I used this feature to let my wife check in on my daughter?s first playoff game while she was at work.)

The iScorecast feature lets you stream game data live to a webpage.

Over the course of the season, the statistics keep accumulating. By the time my daughter?s team was in their playoff tournament, iScore Baseball could show me detailed stats on each batter, including a scatter chart showing their hitting tendencies. (At the 10-and-under level, this largely exposed whether a girl was capable of hitting the ball out of the infield or not.) I was able to export a compiled stat sheet from the app and email it to the coaching staf.

Once a game is done, iScore Baseball can generate and email a box score, a complete scoresheet (in PDF format), and even team stats.

Portions of an iScore-generated scoresheet (above) and box score (below).

For relaxation, I still prefer scoring on paper. But in the past year, scoring baseball games on my phone has transformed from an exercise in pure frustration to an easy, fun experience. As long as my daughter?s playing organized softball, I?m going to score her games digitally.

Dufner had a bogey-free 6-under 64 on another windy day Friday to reach 11-under 129. A week after winning the Byron Nelson Championship, Dufner had a two-stroke lead over Zach Johnson ? the 2010 winner who shot a 67.

The only player to win both PGA Tour events in the Dallas-Fort Worth market in the same year was Hogan in 1946.

?That would be great company to join, obviously,? Dufner said. ?To have anything compared to him or be talked in the same sentence with him is something that would be pretty unique and special to me.?

With the way Dufner is playing these days, his game certainly is in a different class.

Both of Dufner?s PGA Tour victories came in his previous three starts. He has led or shared the lead after 11 of his last 34 rounds.

?When I step to the first tee, I feel like I?m going to play a good round of golf. That?s a nice way to play. It?s a comfortable way to play,? Dufner said. ?I?m just trying to be confident and think about the things I?ve been doing for almost a year now, and realize that those are the things that are making me successful out here, and not get too caught up in everything else that?s going on around me.?

Johnson, who had an opening bogey-free 64, started the second round eagle-birdie-bogey. Then there was a four-hole stretch on the back nine when he alternated birdies and bogeys twice.

During the third round Saturday, Johnson will be paired with his buddy Dufner.

?He?s got a good rhythm about him, about his game right now,? Johnson said. ?But it?s irrelevant who I play with. I?m not playing against him. I?m playing against the golf course and the conditions and the elements that are presented. So that?s my focus.?

Two years ago, Johnson set the Colonial tournament scoring record at 21-under 259 en route to the last of his seven PGA Tour victories.

Van Pelt (64) and Tommy Gainey (67) were tied for third at 133, a stroke better than Tom Gillis (69).

Defending Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial champion David Toms shot a 71 and missed the cut at 5-over 145.

With the wind again blowing steady about 20 mph with higher gusts, Dufner stood in the middle of the fairway at No. 5, his 14th hole of the day. Dufner stepped back twice before changing clubs, then hit the approach to about 18 feet for his sixth and last birdie.

That is the end of Colonial?s ?horrible horseshoe? ? as Nos. 3-5 are known because of their layout and with the longest par 4s sandwiching a 243-yard par 3.

Dufner has played those holes 4 under through two rounds, and wasn?t even aware of the trio?s reputation.

?It?s just a product of playing well and having good control of my golf ball,? he said. ?It doesn?t really matter what holes you?re playing.?

Starting on the back nine, Dufner had two birdies, a 5-footer at the 166-yard 13th hole and 7-footer at the 363-yard 17th. He then birdied Nos. 1-3 for the second day in a row.

?I got off to a great start. ? I had a chance to catch Dufner, is he not hot right now,? said Gainey, who opened his round with three consecutive birdies before bogeys at Nos. 7 and 8. ?I got hot and then let a couple get away.?

After Colonial, Dufner ? who got married between his two victories ? plans to take a short break before beginning preparations for the next major. The U.S. Open is in three weeks at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.

The 35-year-old Dufner, who has moved up to 14th in the world, had consecutive weekend rounds of 75 at the Masters and tied for 24th after starting 69-70.

It was during the final round of the PGA Championship last August when Dufner had consecutive bogeys on holes No. 15-17. That cost him the lead and forced him into a three-hole playoff that he lost to Keegan Bradley.

?I think it helped me out a lot this year. It kind reaffirmed the things that I was doing was right, and I was on the right direction and right path,? he said. ?I didn?t think too much about losing. I just thought about all of the good things that happened. ? I think at the PGA kind of showed me that I could really play at a high level.?

Divots: Sergio Garcia, the `01 Colonial champ, followed his opening 66 with a 73. That included an 8 on the 387-yard ninth hole when he hit his approach into the water fronting the green, and then knocked his drop in there as well. ? Ben Crane (141), who lives just north of Fort Worth, finished his second-round 71 with an eagle at the ninth hole. He holed a wedge shot from 104 yards. ? Harrison Frazar missed the cut with rounds of 72 and 74. He still had a highlight Friday, a hole-in-one with an 8-iron at the 183-yard 16th. ? The last of 14 players to win both the Colonial and Byron Nelson Championship was Rory Sabbatini, at the 2007 Colonial and 2009 Nelson. When Hogan did it in 1946, the tournaments weren?t played in consecutive weeks.

SENIOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (AP) ? Hale Irwin shot his age with a 5-under 66, finishing the second round of the Senior PGA Championship two shots behind leaders Roger Chapman and John Cook.

Cook also had a 66 to match Chapman at 7 under after a more forgiving day at Harbor Shores. Chapman had a 67. Michael Allen broke the course record with a 64, recovering nicely from a first-round 77.

Starting on the back nine, Irwin birdied four of his first six holes. He has won the major championship four times, though not since 2004. He was the 54-hole leader last year at Valhalla but finished fourth.

Chapman led by a stroke after the first round and didn?t make a bogey Friday until the par-5 ninth, his final hole. Irwin also bogeyed No. 9.

BMW PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

VIRGINIA WATER, England (AP) ? England?s James Morrison shot an 8-under 64 to take a four-stroke lead in the BMW PGA Championship, while Rory McIlroy had a 79 to miss the cut and leave himself in danger of losing the top spot in the world ranking to No. 2 Luke Donald.

Morrison had a 12-under 132 total on Wentworth?s West Course in the European Tour?s flagship event. Donald, the defending champion, was tied for second with David Drysdale. Donald had a 68, and Drysdale shot 70. Donald must finish solo eighth or better to reclaim the No. 1 position.

NCAA DIVISION I WOMEN?S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (AP) ? Alabama won the NCAA Division I Women?s Golf Championship for the first time, holding off Southern California by a stroke on the 72nd hole.

The Crimson Tide gave coach Mic Potter his first national title when senior Brooke Pancake rolled in a 4-footer for par on No. 18. Alabama finished at 6-over 294 for a 19-over 1,171 total.

Oklahoma?s Chirapat Jao-Javanil won the individual title by four strokes, closing with a 2-under 70 to finish at 6-under 282.

(AP) ? Grammy-winning folk musician Doc Watson was in critical condition Thursday at a North Carolina hospital after falling at his home in Deep Gap earlier this week.

Watson's daughter, Nancy, told The Associated Press that the 89-year-old Watson fell Monday at his home. She said he didn't break any bones but that he was "real sick."

A spokeswoman at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem said Arthel Watson ? Arthel is his legal first name ? was in critical condition Thursday.

The blind singer and guitarist has won several Grammys, including a lifetime achievement award. He also received the National Medal of the Arts.

Watson also received the North Carolina Award, the state's highest civilian award, in 1986. He and his family received a North Carolina Heritage Award in 1986.

He's known as a master of the flatpicking style of guitar playing and for starting Merlefest, an annual gathering of musicians in North Wilkesboro named after his son, a musician who died in a tractor accident in 1985.

Doc Watson's wife of more than 60 years, RosaLee, has been in a nursing home since last year, Nancy Watson said. The two married when she was 15 and he was 23.

"She saw what little good there was in me and there was little," Doc said in an interview with The Associated Press in 2000. "I'm awful glad she cared about me, and I'm awful glad she married me."

Wayne Martin, executive director of the North Carolina Arts Council, said Watson takes southern Appalachian forms of music, such as ballad singing, old-time string music and bluegrass, and makes them accessible.

"He takes old music and puts his own creativity on it," Martin said. "It retained its core, yet it felt relevant to people today."

The Yellow Sea Blu-ray Review | AVForums.com - UK Online

The second outing for Korean director and writer Hong-jin Na - His first film The Chaser, was a critical success and, as such his next release was highly anticipated. Only a little less gruesome and no less gritty or lifelike than its predecessor, The Yellow Sea certainly lives up to expectations.

The film is set partly in the desolate Yanji region of China close to the Russian border. This area has a large Korean population, displaced from their homeland during various conflicts and now unable to return. Organised crime is rife and corruption is even more prevalent than in the rest of the country. Largely ignored by the authorities, simply maintaining any sort of standard of living in this province is a hard slog and lure of easy money through crime is easy to understand.

The film stars virtual unknown (even in Korea) Jung woo Ha as Gu Nam, taxi driver, gambler and somewhat hopeless family man. His wife has gone to work in Korea but has disappeared from sight, not...

Picture

The disc presents a theatrically correct widescreen 2.35:1 1080p transfer using the AVC MPEG4 codec. This movie follows the now usual practice of shooting on 35mm and transferring to edit digitally. As is common with this genre, many shots are quite dark or have muted colours. Some noise is evident and compression of black levels has also occurred probably as a result of the colourising process. As previously mentioned, there is much handheld wobbly camera work, resulting in the potential for plenty of motion issues if your TV cannot keep up with the action. On the whole, picture quality is better than one might expect for the genre, but lighting and exposure has been compromised, resulting in a wider range of focal length than might be expect for a major motion picture. This means that in some scenes, the differentiation between main characters and the backgrounds is not as sharply defined as one might expect.

The transfer to Blu-ray is good, with no visible artefacts, even during the fasted moving segments. It was noticed that the first second or so of the film producer?s title is missing, with the music starting way too abruptly.

Another issue with the screener disc supplied was that it refused to play on a couple of Blu-Ray laptops, but play faultlessly on 2 different Blu-Ray players. This could simply be due to the lower read strength of recordable discs, but may be evidence of a minor incompatibility issue. It should be stressed however, that these comments relate to the screener (A pre-production, limited run disc) and may not affect the full release.

Picture score : 6

Sound

There is only one soundtrack presented on the disc - Audio: DTS HD Master 5.1 ? Korean with English subtitles.

The care and attention that has gone into this film is no more evident than in the sound track. The music score is moody, atmospheric and beautifully produced. Dialogue is fairly muted, but as it is all Korean and Mandarin Chinese, this is hardly an issue. Subtitles are not burnt into the main picture, but are automatically selected from the normal sub title options. There are very few typos or humorous gaffs and no loss of understanding or context.

The surround sound is a little low in level, with some fairly unsubtle effects from time to time. An attempt has been made to give the illusion of vehicle drive bys, but this largely fails to impress. Fortunately these are very small proportion of the film and do not spoil the overall effect. There is very little that feels false about the effects. The music score being the dominant part of the soundtrack with a light atmospheric layer

The ultra low sub around the 20Hz range is somewhat uneven, suggesting when mastered that this was not audible or at least, was ignored. These frequencies are not usually reproduced in cinemas to any great extent, but many home cinema subs most certainly will. This is most noticeable where effects have been added over car crashes and the occasional explosion. The bottom register is missing, while for other less major effects it comes rumbling in at a pace. Not a reference disc by any stretch.

Sound score : 7

Extras

The extras were good in some respects (If only for the amount of content), but the quality seriously disappointed. The UK and Korean trailers were fine, but the ?making of? film suffers from extremely poor video almost to the point of being unwatchable.

Made in 4:3 SD, Dolby Digital 2.0 and subtitled from original Korean, it is well over an hour long. It makes excellent background research around the film itself, helping to place characters and locations into the storyline. It does however reveal some of the plot of the film, but not the key points or eventual outcome.

The main issue is the poor conversion with some serious picture stuttering throughout. This appears to be on original transfer or introduced during the editing process, as cut in scenes of film are fine. The varied colour balance, poor quality and exposure coupled with the stuttering lead to the opinion that little value has been placed upon this production, which is a shame as it is interesting and well put together.

On the plus side, it has good subtitles and by sheer length alone makes for an absorbing watch. It features interviews with the director, main cast, stunt director and designers, plus plenty of behind the scenes footage of some of the set pieces.

It is quite funny to see the Korean film making process ? no camera tracking vehicles or car trailers, just cameras fixed to the car with a generator roped into the boot! Special effects and blue screen were obviously used to a minimum, but the fake wound makers were obviously working overtime for much of the shoot.

The menu is straight forward (No pop up menu is available, with just a background keyed version of the main menu offered) with access to the main movie, a usual and sensibly designed chapter list plus the extras.

Extras score : 6

Verdict

This is no technical masterpiece, but when measured against some of its peers (And even its older sibling ?The Chase?) is well made and produced. This film might be one to check out motion compensation and the ability to resolve low level picture information, but there is little else to trouble most systems. Where many lower budget movies fall down is the lack of decent lighting and poor camera work and this one is no exception. Look hard and the detail is there, but there are just too many issues to ignore. The sound while generally good is not going to blow your socks off. It simply does not have the level of polish we have come to expect from Western releases.

As an example of its genre, this is a well made and sophisticated movie. In parts brutal and gruesome, but balanced with an absorbing story line and quite penetrable despite the language and cultural barriers. The music score also is excellent, indeed one of the best to come out of Korea so far. This type of film is going to appeal to a fairly small cross section of society, so will never be a huge hit. The at times confused story line is a little distracting and both the ending and twist in the tale is a little predictable. If however you like gritty, gory crime films with plenty of martial arts and believable locations, then you will not be disappointed. It?s an awful lot of action crammed into a little over 2 ? hours and is a credible second outing for Director Hong-jin Na.

Overall score : 7

New Zealand says 'zero' budget will bring surplus

(AP) ? New Zealand's center-right government unveiled a relatively austere budget Thursday, saying it will tackle rising debt and return the country's books to the black in two years.

Finance Minister Bill English described his economic blueprint as a "zero budget" because it contains no increase in discretionary spending. Under the plan, modest spending increases on education and health would be paid for by raising tobacco taxes and increasing student loan repayments, among other measures.

The government's pledge to return to surplus also depends on a plan to sell minority stakes in several state-owned energy companies. Many New Zealanders oppose that plan, which has sparked several large street protests.

Neighboring Australia recently announced a plan to become the first major developed nation to return to a budget surplus following the economic downturn, and New Zealand hopes to follow close behind. China's continued demand for commodities has helped both countries weather the downturn better than most. In New Zealand, the unemployment rate remains a relatively healthy 6.7 percent.

However, an earthquake in the second-largest city of Christchurch last year, which killed 185 people and destroyed much of the downtown, has cost the country billions of dollars. And the country's small size and reliance on farming makes it vulnerable to economic changes in Europe and elsewhere.

The National Party-led government predicts the rebuilding effort in Christchurch will stimulate the economy, helping it grow by an average of 3 percent over each of the next four years.

English said the budget balances austerity with growth, making it a "sensible budget for uncertain times."

But opposition Labour Party leader David Shearer said austerity will not help improve the economy. "A zero budget is nothing to boast about. It's an admission of failure," he said in a release.

Opposition parties also blame National for imposing tax cuts they say have benefited wealthy New Zealanders at the expense of low-income earners and the country's overall economic health.

The budget plan shows the country running a deficit of NZ$7.9 billion ($5.9 billion) in the fiscal year that begins in July. The government expects a deficit of NZ$2 billion ($1.5 billion) the following year before returning to a slim surplus of NZ$200 million ($150 million) in the year beginning July 2014.

The budget includes a 40 percent hike in tobacco taxes over four years and a plan to raise extra money by cracking down on tax fraud. It shows public debt peaking at about 29 percent of gross domestic product next year, a low level compared with the U.S. and Europe.

However, New Zealand continues to have relatively high levels of private debt, which has helped fuel high housing prices. Concerns about the total debt levels last year prompted two ratings agencies to downgrade New Zealand's credit rating.

Although English was promoting his plan as a "zero budget," increased costs for nondiscretionary items like the pension program are forecast to push overall government spending up by about 4.5 percent over the next year, to NZ$73.7 billion ($55 billion), or one-third of the country's economy.

Digital and Analog Hearing Aids | Baby care | Health and Fitness ...

In that place are many people out there who buy digital and analog sense of ~ aids, but don?t fully seem to understand that which they are all about and how to operate them. Let?s say you got your sense of ~ tested by your doctor, and were told that you power of determination need to use a hearing device. You were likewise told which device to use specifically ? perchance the digital hearing devices. Now, maybe you?ve heard of sense of ~ aids, but are not sure of what they do exactly. You are not smooth aware of the different types available out in that place. So, you are left with one question: what are sense of ~ aids in the first place?

A hearing succor, as the name implies, aids your sense of ~. It is an electro-acoustic device (digital or analog), what one. is either fit inside or behind the ear to modulate and enlarge the wearers hearing capacity. Hearing devices are basically of two greater types ? the digital and the analog hearing aids. The dissimilarity between the two is that Digital hearing envelop digital computer technology, while analog sense of ~ supports are non-digital and use electrical signals to enlarge sounds. All hearing devices, whether digital or analog, are specifically designed to enlarge the sound waves that reach the ear tympanum. This allows hearing-impaired tribe to understand speech better.

Both analog and digital aids demand the use of three essential components:

1. An Amplifier ? Helps grow the electrical energy generated to promote sounds.

2. A Recipient ? To convert electric energy into acoustic whole waves.

3. A Microphone ? Helps gather up the acoustic whole waves (from the atmosphere/surroundings) and converts them into electrical force.

Analog hearing devices use varying electrical signals what one. resonate continuously to generate sound (like loudspeakers and microphones). The varying electrical signals produced come sound patterns, which are then made louder (amplified) and fed into the ear phones on the aids. These are fixed shut to the wearer?s ear drum, to which the sound is transferred. Analog aids do not hold many features similar to the advanced Digital sense of ~ aids, which is why they are generally smaller expensive.

Digital hearing relieves on the other palm and fingers, pick up the electrical signals produced, and transmute them into ?data bits?. These are verse that are operated by tiny computer chips in the inside of the hearing relieves. This allows users to course and tailor the sounds to appropriate frequencies. The engaging thing about digital hearing supports is that they admit the digitalis sound representations to be manipulated in each imaginable ways. This is in fact, the biggest favorable opportunity of digital hearing devices.

The Author has worked as an audiologist for the two largest digital sense of ~ aids services companies in Australia for the latest 7 years, and has worked in various clinics and locations giving a wide yet intimate knowledge of all aspects of the Australian sense of ~ aid market.Author has a particular interest in tribe who have tried and failed with sense of ~ aid in the past, and more recently, in improving labor delivery to give more clients the most good possible outcomes they deserve.

Originator still does clinical work on the Gold Border and Brisbane, and is a moderator on Australia?s premier Sense of ~ Aid Forums site.
