Digital Storm Bolt: Can tiny gaming PCs squeeze out stagnating ...

Digital Storm Bolt gaming PC

Long have the Nintendos, Segas, and Sonys dominated the world of gaming. The gaming console has been very successful for the past thirty-some years, but it is slowly being eroded by other devices. Mobile phones and tablets are only becoming more common, and they offer affordable, portable experiences. In fact, one could make an argument for the iPad being the best gaming device in years with its mix of countless casual games with a number of triple-A titles that take advantage of the platform?s unique features. That?s not the only competition traditional gaming consoles are seeing, though. Now, we?re seeing small PCs coming that could do some damage to the console-focused gaming model.

Boutique vendor Digital Storm has just released a tiny gaming rig called the Bolt that is quite compelling. Starting at $999, you?ll get a computer that is only 13.4?13.3?3.6 inches (34x34x9cm). The budget model comes with an Intel Core i3-2100, 8GB of RAM, and a Nvidia GTX 650 Ti GPU with 2GB of RAM. Using Digital Storm?s purchase configuration tool, you can upgrade the internals all the way to an Intel Core i7-3770K, 16GB of RAM, and an Nvidia GTX 680. You pay for what you get, which means the ?Ultimate? model comes at a premium price of $1,949. Despite its small size, the folks at Digital Storm claim that you?ll have no problem fitting in a large graphics card if you decide to upgrade down the road.

Digital Storm gaming PC

Companies like Alienware and Digital Storm seem to have the high-end console replacements covered, but what about the low-end? The rumored Steam Box from Valve has a lot of people interested in what a low-cost, living room friendly, gaming PC could mean for the industry. One of the biggest advantages of gaming consoles for consumers is the simplicity ? plug it in, pop in a disc, and play without ever worrying about drivers or graphics settings. A simple computer with the Steam juggernaut behind it could really change the game because while it?s great to have customizable machines like the Bolt, the simplicity of the Steam Box would be a welcome addition the console competition.

It?s worth noting that despite some bumps in the road, cloud gaming is becoming more and more feasible as internet speeds increase and hardware prices plummet. To get the best experience with PC gaming, we might need a machine that costs somewhere between one and two thousand dollars now, but that clearly won?t be the case for very long. Server-side components of games are ever-expanding, meaning gamers will be able to pay a small monthly fee as opposed to having to buy a serious gaming rig.

Gaming is in for an interesting decade ahead, and it?s only going to get better and easier. In other words, those people who said PC gaming was dead might have spoken a bit too soon.

Romney erases Obama lead among women, poll says | NOLA.com

WASHINGTON -- What gender gap?

Less than two weeks out from Election Day, Republican Mitt Romney has erased President Barack Obama's 16-point advantage among women, a new Associated Press-GfK poll shows. And the president, in turn, has largely eliminated Romney's edge among men.

Those churning gender dynamics leave the presidential race still a virtual dead heat, with Romney favored by 47 percent of likely voters and Obama by 45 percent, a result within the poll's margin of sampling error, the survey shows.

After a commanding first debate performance and a generally good month, Romney has gained ground with Americans on a number of important fronts, including their confidence in how he would handle the economy and their impressions of his ability to understand their problems.

At the same time, expectations that Obama will be re-elected have slipped: Half of voters now expect the president to win a second term, down from 55 percent a month earlier.

For all of the good news for Republicans, however, what matters most in the election endgame is Romney's standing in the handful of states whose electoral votes still are up for grabs. And polls in a number of those battleground states still appear to favor Obama.

As the election nears, Romney has been playing down social issues and trying to project a more moderate stance on matters such as abortion in an effort to court female voters. The AP-GfK poll, taken Friday through Tuesday, shows Romney pulling even with Obama among women at 47-47 after lagging by 16 points a month earlier.

But now his campaign is grappling with the fallout from a comment by a Romney-endorsed Senate candidate in Indiana, who said that when a woman becomes pregnant during a rape "that's something God intended."

Romney quickly distanced himself from the remark by Republican Richard Mourdock. But Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the incident was "a reminder that a Republican Congress working with a Republican President Mitt Romney would feel that women should not be able to make choices about their own health care."

A renewed focus on social issues would be an unwelcome development for Romney: Among female likely voters, 55 percent say Obama would make the right decisions on women's issues, compared with 41 percent who think Romney would.

Romney's pitch to women has been focused squarely on the economy, making the case that what women want most is to ensure their families and their country are on a solid financial footing. The poll shows that message appears to be taking root.

A month ago, women favored Obama over Romney on the economy 56 percent to 40 percent. Now, the split has shifted to 49 percent for Romney and 45 percent for Obama.

Similarly, Obama's lead among women as the candidate who better understands the people's problems has narrowed considerably, from a 58-36 Obama advantage last month to a 50-43 Obama edge now.

Monica Jensen, a 55-year-old independent from Mobile, Ala., says she voted for Obama in 2008 but will shift her vote to Romney this time, largely because of the economy.

"I'm ready for a change," she said. "I want to see the economy go in a different direction."

Ginny Lewis, a Democrat and 72-year-old retired district attorney from Princeton, Ky., says she'll vote for Romney because "I'm tired of the Republicans blaming all the debt on Democrats, so let them take over and see what they do."

Not that she's optimistic about how that will turn out, though. "I think things will get worse before they get better," she said.

Lindsey Hornbaker, a 25-year-old graduate student and nanny, hasn't been swayed by Romney's charm offensive.

Hornbaker, interviewed Wednesday in Davenport, Iowa, where she was attending an Obama rally, said Romney can tweak his tone but not what she sees as a record focused far more on top income earners and out of touch with most working families.

"I heard him go out of his way to sound so moderate during the debate," she said. "And I thought: 'Who is this? Where did this come from?' He may sound like he's focused on the middle class. But where's the record?"

Obama, meanwhile, has been working to shore up his support among men, who tend to be more Republican than women. In the 2008 election, men broke 49 percent for Obama to 48 percent for John McCain, even though Obama got 53 percent of the vote overall. The president's job approval ratings among men have tended to fall below his ratings among women throughout his first term.

A month ago, Romney's advantage among men was 13 percentage points. Now, it's down to 5 points, with most of the shift toward Obama coming among unmarried men.

Obama's election chances hinge on turning out voters like Jon Gerton, a disabled construction worker from Jonesboro, Ark. Gerton's a staunch Obama supporter -- but he didn't vote in 2008.

"It takes longer than four years to get things to the point where things are going better," Gerton said. "Four years, it's not very long."

There has been a gender gap in every presidential election since 1980. In 2008, women were 7 percentage points more likely than men to vote for Obama.

Overall, people are significantly more optimistic about the economy and unemployment in the coming year than they have been at any point in AP-GfK polling going back to March 2011, when the poll first started asking those questions. And likely voters are even more optimistic than other adults.

Nearly six in 10 likely voters think the economy will improve in the next year, up from 46 percent last month. And 42 percent think the number of unemployed Americans will drop in the next year, up from 32 percent in September.

Count Chrysta Walker, of Cedar Lake, Ind., among the voters who are sticking with Obama because they think he's got the right solutions for the fragile economy.

"He's got the middle class at heart," says the 58-year-old Walker. On the economy, she says, Obama "did as well as could be expected because he didn't get a lot of cooperation."

David Bierwirth, who owns an autograph sales business in Las Vegas, turned out at a Romney rally in Henderson this week to show his support for the GOP nominee. To Bierwirth, his vote for Romney is all about the economy.

"I want people back to work," he says, "because then they will buy my products."

The Associated Press-GfK poll was conducted Oct. 19-23 by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,186 adults nationwide, including 839 likely voters. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points; for likely voters it is 4.2 points.

(AP) ? Ray Lewis has been placed on injured reserve with the "designated to return" tag, which provides him the chance to play again this season.

Lewis tore his right triceps in Sunday's game against Dallas. He was scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday.

His return his season is unlikely, but by being designated to return, the 37-year-old is eligible to come back in six weeks.

Coach John Harbaugh says, "We have no idea whether that time frame has anything to do with the injury, but there's an opportunity and we're going to keep the door open."

The loss of Lewis was balanced somewhat by the return of linebacker Terrell Suggs, who practiced Wednesday for the first time this season. Suggs has been out with a torn right Achillies tendon.

GOP says it raised nearly $55M for convention

(AP) ? The group that hosted the Republican National Convention says it raised $55.3 million for the GOP's festivities in Tampa, Fla.

Financial documents filed Wednesday show hundreds of individuals and corporations contributed to the August GOP convention.

High-dollar donations included $5 million from Las Vegas casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, who's poured tens of millions into the presidential race. More than $100,000 apiece in contributions came from household names like Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

The Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., reports raising $24 million ? falling short of its $36.7 million fundraising goal. It relied on at least $5 million in corporate donations despite pledges by party officials to raise cash only from individuals.

The party conventions raise money to pay for tony political shindigs beyond what taxpayer dollars fund.

New ETN Offers Offers Retail Investors 16x ... - Business Insider

Ronald Martinez / Getty Images

UBS announced a new exchange-traded note today that illustrates just how wild the "search for yield" has become.

The ETN, called the?ETRACS Monthly Pay 2x Leveraged Mortgage REIT,?offers double the return of the?Market Vectors Global Mortgage REITs Index ? itself an investment vehicle 8x leveraged to mortgage-backed securities.

So, in effect, if you're bullish on mortgage-backed securities, you could use this product to lever up 16 times.

However, the real driver behind this new ETN and those like it is the low-interest rate environment that has dominated markets over the past few years. This has launched an epic "search for yield" among fixed-income investors looking to find a place to park their cash and generate a reasonable return.

With yields so low ? and, more specifically, the spread between MBS and Treasury yields so low ? investors have had to lever up their purchases of MBS in order to capture some more return.

A few tweets from bond trader David Schawel really drive this point home:
?

And of course, since these exchange-traded products are geared toward retail investors, when interest rates finally do rise, they are the ones who will lose big.

Personal Trainer Courses - PTNet | The Personal Trainer Network

UK Personal Trainers

Start the right personal trainer course for you!

The costs, duration and package of qualifications vary depending on which Training Provider you choose, and so making the right decision can be difficult.

The truth is, you will be hard-pushed to find a personal trainer that wasn?t happy with the Training Provider they used, be it YMCA Fit, NCCA, Premier Training, Lifetime, the Training Room, Future Fit or many others, as all of these companies are trying to be the best, all provide a slightly different service, and are all fighting over control of the market. However, you will need to consider numerous other factors when choosing the right personal trainer course for you.

?

The United Kingdom

There are two main qualifications you need to work in the industry in the UK.

  • Level 2 Gym/Fitness Instructor Award
  • Level 3 Personal Training Diploma

?

The United States

Personal trainer certification in the United States is slightly different. When getting certified in the US you just need to be sure of the following:

  • That the organization has been certified by an authorized third party.
  • Whether the certification is regional or international.

?

Training Providers

There are some organizations a which are looked upon more favorably in terms of employment opportunities, in both the US, UK and Australia, and so this is something to bear in mind. You can view the Training Providers directory for details on each company and recommendations.

Furthermore, you may struggle to build your business in such a competitive market if you?ve missed out on the additional qualifications that the more expensive courses and workshops provide, such as Circuit Training, Suspension Training or Yoga.

// ]]>

If you?re serious about a career as a Personal Trainer
then achieving the bare-minimum qualifications is probably not enough to ensure your success.
Fortunately, most of the more expensive, and ultimately more valuable personal trainer courses come with finance options in place, so that you can pay for the tuition in instalments.

personal-trainer-coursesDo you have what it takes?

It?s not all about qualifications; your success is also determined by the content of your character, your confidence, communication skills, passion for health and fitness; your motivational skills and your own fitness levels.
With the right attributes it doesn?t take long to establish a great reputation, a lot of recommendations, and an ever-expanding client-base.

And remember, paying for a course should be an investment in your future, as successful personal trainers make an average of ?30 / $50 per hour, and have a hugely positive effect on the happiness and well-being of many people.

Personal Trainer Course

On top of your Level 2 Gym Instructor Award and Level 3 Personal Trainer Award, (in the UK), or your US Accredited Certification; having a more specialised understanding of Nutrition, as well as being a qualified Fitness Class instructor can help you immensely.

Complete the form on the top right-hand side of this page and a Careers Advisor can talk through the various options available, and help determine exactly what is right for you.

What are the costs?

costs-feesAll the Training Providers have different prices, but they can range from ?2,000 to ?5,000 in the UK, and from $300 to $1800 in the USA.
This might seem like a lot of money ? and that?s because it is! But this short-term expense is your long-term gain.
If you?re passionate about health, fitness and helping others, then completing a personal trainer course is well worth the initial expense.

To make things easier, most Training Providers allow the option to pay back in instalments, and can guarantee employment opportunities, so that you know you?ll be in a position where you will be earning.

In most cases, whether you pay for your tuition in one go, or monthly, you will likely have a registration fee to pay so that your space is secure on the course. Again, this varies from one company to the next, but you?re looking at between ?150 to ?350. A Careers Advisor can give you an exact idea of what to expect following your phone consultation.

If you are accepted onto a personal trainer course be aware that spaces are limited for each date/venue, so register as soon as you can.

Apple iPhone 5 (Sprint)

The Apple iPhone 5 for Sprint ($199 and up) is the same physical model as is sold on Verizon Wireless. Like Verizon's phone, it takes the iPhone's traditional advantages, including a well-designed consistent interface, amazing apps, and robust retail support, and literally extends them. It's beautiful and fun to use. The difference with Sprint's?phone, of course, is the network and service plans. Sprint is the only iPhone carrier with truly unlimited data, but you'll be sipping it through a tiny straw until Sprint builds a wider 4G LTE network.

In this review, we'll focus on the difference between Sprint's model and the Verizon Wireless and AT&T units we've already reviewed; please refer to those articles for a discussion of the phone's body, software, and basic features.

Voice Quality and Network
The iPhone 5 on Sprint is a very good voice phone. Reception was solid, and voice quality was quite punchy. I had no trouble hearing a caller over construction noise in my ear, and I liked the noticeable side tone. Transmissions through the microphone from a noisy area blanked the background noise well, although voice quality was a touch muddled. The speakerphone was of adequate volume and transmissions came through clear, if nasal.

If you're looking for the ideal Sprint voice phone, though, remember that Sprint's HTC EVO 4G LTE will support "HD Voice" next year; the iPhone isn't compatible with Sprint's version of HD Voice.

The iPhone 5 also supports Sprint's new LTE network. Sprint's 3G system is the nation's slowest according to our 30-city tests, which means Web pages and app downloads just crawl along, and video streaming is often just impossible. LTE boosts that a lot: it was 21 times faster than Sprint 3G when we tested it in New York City.

But Sprint's LTE lags way behind competitors Verizon and AT&T on availability. Where Verizon covers 400 cities and AT&T has more than 75, Sprint has only about a dozen big cities and a smattering of small towns. Sprint promises to ramp up LTE coverage to more than 100 markets in the next several months.

Where Sprint wins is on service plans. Thanks to its unlimited data plan, you can stream all of the video and download all the files you want at prices starting at $79.99/month, less than Verizon and AT&T charge. Sprint's 3G network is too slow to stream much, but this unlimited data will really come into its own with LTE.

For now, you can hunt down Wi-Fi hotspots and take advantage of the iPhone's fast 5GHz Wi-Fi. Just like on the Verizon model, switching to the uncrowded 5GHz band doubled the iPhone's Wi-Fi speeds, enabling us to watch an uninterrupted HD video when streaming that had choked up on a busy 2.4GHz network.

The Sprint iPhone 5 works on a wide range of networks. According to Apple, it supports CDMA EV-DO Rev A and Rev. B (800/1900/2100MHz), UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850/900/1900/2100MHz), GSM/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900MHz) and LTE (Bands 1/3/5/13/25). Sprint will unlock its phone after 90 days of use if you want to put in a foreign SIM card.?

One thing you can't do is?talk on the phone while using the Internet, just like on Verizon's model. AT&T's iPhone is the only one which lets you make phone calls while online, which is key if you intend to use the phone as an in-car GPS. You also can't?move a Sprint iPhone to Verizon or AT&T's LTE network. Verizon has (and uses) the ability to reject other carriers' phones on its CDMA network, and this model lacks AT&T's LTE bands.

I got shorter 3G talk time on the Sprint model than on Verizon's unit, probably because of weaker Sprint wireless signal. Still, the 6 hours, 55 minutes of talk time I got was perfectly decent. If you don't have LTE in your area, leave LTE switched off, because otherwise, searching for 4G will kill your battery.

Conclusions
The iPhone 5 is one of the few phones where you can count on getting the same model on multiple carriers. Sprint's model is just as good as Verizon's and AT&T's, and like on those other two carriers, it shares our Editors' Choice with the Samsung Galaxy S III. They're both excellent. The iPhone has better games, a better body design and is more usable one-handed; the S III has a bigger screen, works better as an in-car GPS and lets you bring an extra battery.

For a while now, we've been rating Sprint Editors' Choice phones a half-star less than similar phones on competing carriers because of the lack of Sprint LTE coverage. I'm not ready to remove that handicap yet. The dramatic difference I saw in Web speeds between Sprint's 3G network and LTE only underscores how badly Sprint needs some sort of 4G, and it isn't delivering yet.

If you're buying an iPhone, it's for the next two years. Your choice of carrier here comes down to how much you trust Sprint. If you believe the carrier's promises that LTE will come to 100 more cities within a few months, then this iPhone 5 with unlimited data is a great deal. If you'd rather see fast Internet speeds the day you buy your phone, it's time to look at AT&T's and Verizon's faster, but more expensive networks.

City Council Approves New Rules for Campaign Finance Reform ...

This afternoon, the Seattle City Council approved new election rules to prohibit candidates from rolling over leftover cash from one campaign to the next and limit political campaigning to the 22 months prior to every election. The vote passed with seven council members in favor, and council president Sally Clark and Tom Rasmussen opposed.

"This is a good, positive step forward in hoping to rebuild confidence and public trust in our elections process," said one of the bill's cosponsors, Tim Burgess.

"It helps with the public perception of corruption," added the bill's prime champion, Mike O'Brien, before posing with Burgess for this charming victory photo.

But not all council members believed the legislation would be useful or its sponsors' talking points were honest. "We should speak plainly... this is flawed legislation," argued Rasmussen. "The sponsors are seeking to bootstrap themselves legally with talk of perceptions of corruption."

"In Seattle, grassroots activism works!" Rasmussen added. "Incumbancy isn't guaranteed."

Clark worried that the new rules would benefit self funders and people with rich contacts at the expense of female candidates and minorities. Then Clark proposed a new (old) idea for the council to consider: "It is time to restart the conversation about public financing," she said. "If we, as a city, want to get to real reform, public financing is key."

Between 1979 and 1991, Seattle's public partially funded candidates' campaigns for office. A state-level initiative ended public financing in 1992. Sixteen years later, the State legislature passed a 2008 law allowing publicly financed campaigns at the local level if approved by a public vote.

"I'd like to see [public campaign financing] on the ballot by November of next year," agreed council member Nick Licata. "It does allow a broader range of candidates."

Record-setting skydiver trained in Texas facility

An altitude chamber at San Antonio's Brooks City-Base used decades ago in development of the U.S. space program played a key role in Felix Baumgartner's record-breaking skydive over New Mexico on Sunday.

To prepare for his televised leap from more than 24 miles up, Baumgartner and his capsule were tested in a large environmental chamber at Building 160 at Brooks, part of an aerospace complex dedicated by President John F. Kennedy. Although hypoxia, or lack of oxygen, was a key concern, Baumgartner was surprised how cold it felt, even while wearing his protective suit, when the temperature in the chamber was lowered to -50 degrees Fahrenheit.

"I remember hearing him say, 'It's pretty cold' - a lot colder than he expected," said Bill Ercoline, manager of San Antonio operations for Wyle, an aerospace firm and tenant at Brooks.

Broke sound barrier

During a weeklong visit in November 2011, Baumgartner and his capsule "went up" on three simulations in the chamber, including one at an altitude of 120,000 feet - the highest level ever replicated in the facility, Ercoline said. When the 43-year-old skydiver stepped off the pod, the chamber simulated a rapid descent.

The specially designed capsule built by Sage Cheshire Aerospace for the Red Bull Stratos project was returned to Brooks for more tests in the chamber on Sept. 24.

"They wanted to make sure everything worked correctly. And they wanted to keep him safe," Ercoline said.

John "Mac" McCarthy, director of facilities and infrastructure with the Brooks Development Authority, said he and his wife and friends intently watched the jump Sunday on the Discovery Channel. Baumgartner set a record for the highest human freefall and was the first skydiver to break the speed of sound, reaching a peak velocity of 833.9 mph.

"It was pretty intense," McCarthy said. "This furthered our knowledge of how a human can survive these various elements."

Aid to astronauts

McCarthy said the successful jump serves as a testament that the equipment used for years by astronauts and jet pilots can still save lives.

Brooks was run by the military from 1917 to 2011, but no longer is an Air Force base. The development authority owns the buildings and equipment, and is converting the base to a planned, mixed-use community.

"Even though it has some age on it, it still is cutting-edge equipment," McCarthy said.

Ercoline said the altitude chamber has been used to test consumer products. One test, aimed at simulating a rapid descent of a commercial airliner, gauged the effects of altitude change on a laptop computer.

"We do a wide range of experiments with these chambers," Ercoline said.

Ensure Your Home Business Is A Success With These Helpful ...

Ensure Your Home Business Is A Success With These Helpful Suggestions

Sometimes life happens and you unexpectedly hit a rough patch. You can lose your job and struggle to know what to do. One possible solution is to start your own business at home. Have you considered it? Here are helpful pointers on how to achieve self-employment success.

The key to success in running your home based business is the ability to know when to make changes and occasionally take risks. Keeping your marketing efforts diverse is the best way to reach the widest audience. If you follow the same plan all of the time, you will not know if you could have done a better job.

Join a couple of discussion groups and forums that discuss the topic of home based business. You can easily find many reputable sites from a simple Google search. There are also a good deal of blogs on the subject of home-based business that you might find helpful.

Treat your clients to meals and entertainment, and you may receive tax breaks. If you bring clients to a fancy restaurant to close a deal, you can deduct part of the expenses associated with that event. Just save all your receipts, because if you?re audited, this will provide you with proof that you were with clients.

If investors lend you money, they will expect to see information about your business, which can leave you open to outside scrutiny. Put your thoughts to how to be the most effective with the funds you have.

Use your lunch break for laughing! When you laugh, you give a boost to your brain, your lungs, and many other systems in your body. Best of all, it helps to remove stress and improve your outlook on life. Visit YouTube and watch some clips from your favorite comedy shows; this will improve your mood and put you in the right frame of mind to return to your home business enterprise duties.

Learn to approach a small business with patience. A home-based business is not going to flourish overnight. It takes time and effort for home businesses to flourish; as you gain more experience, your business will have a better chance to succeed. Patience and consistency are both important items to maintain throughout your business ownership.

Be sure that everything about your home business is professional looking. Unprofessional websites tend to turn off customers. If you want to learn additional ideas for how to make a great website, check out other professional websites.

Home based business owners are all over the Internet. Visit several message boards or forums, both within and outside of your specific niches. Solid advice where you can learn new lessons about operating your own business can come from many different areas, so you don?t want to limit yourself to only your niche.

Don?t forget the importance of a functional website that sells the products for your online business. This is a great way for you to be able to broaden your target audience and increase the amount of sales that your business receives. If you aren?t sure how to organize a website, ask a professional.

One of the most cost efficient ways of advertising is through the internet. Design a professional site that is easily navigated, or hire a web designer to do it. Give your customers useful content and the ability to stay connected with you. Allow them the convenience of ordering your goods online wherever possible. Continue to fine tune and investigate new ways to make your website a successful marketing tool for your company.

Keep a good record of daily spending and other expenses that have a financial impact on your home based business. You?ll need the information for figuring out your deductions at tax time, and also if you?re unlucky enough to be audited.

Dedicate a specific part of your house to your business, and set it up as a work area. Make sure there?s enough room in your place for everything to stay organized. Organization is a very important part of building a successful home based business, and having your own business space will help you achieve this goal.

Running a successful home business enterprise takes initiative and a drive to succeed. There are rules and regulations governing what kind of business you can have from home. While office workers can usually have at-home offices, if you are running a business that sells products or receives customers, you are likely going to face governmental hurdles to running the business from home. This information is readily available from governmental bodies in any region. There may also be additional rules for your neighborhood that are part of your homeowners? association?s rules. This also helps you make a clean break between your home and business life.

A good support system, comprised of those closest to you, is a necessity if you are going to work from home. A home based business will take up a lot of your time, and it can be hard and stressful work. Your family must not only support you, but they must also allow you time alone for your work.

Your website should be able to process sales. To compete in today?s market you need the ability to sell your product online, not just at a physical location. Many online providers allow you to register domain names at affordable rates.

Find competitive rates of businesses in your local area when trying to start your own. Base your rates on these businesses while trying to remain competitive. Make the money you need to keep going and charge enough to do that.

While reading this article, hopefully you were inspired to take your life into your own hands. You were given a lot of tips about starting a work from home business, and now is the time to grab the bull by the horns and go for it! You can keep this article for reference to read anytime you are not sure what the next step you should be taking is

How Self-Employed Bloggers and Online Marketers Should ...

What Bloggers' And Internet Marketers' Schedules Should Look Like:

1. Write your blog post first thing in the morning (3-4 hours)

Getting ready for your day and working out is?ideally?the only thing that should be stopping you from working on your blog post in the morning. Since you should always complete your pressing tasks at the first of the day,?do not allow?any lounging or?web-surfing?to slow you up.

Now, everyone is different but I?d say, on average, to allow yourself at least?3 to 4 hours from start to finish for writing your daily blog post. It seems to always take me longer than I expected. You might even take longer, I sure have, but with experience you will get faster and faster.?How ever long it takes, just get it done.

If you are?working?another?job?while your starting your online business then decide how often you want to write a blog post. It?s okay to take a couple of days to write an article just as long as you are consistent. Start by telling yourself that you have to spend at least an hour a day and then?stick to it. Work on it at lunch break or as soon as you get off work but don?t let yourself miss that hour.

2. Driving traffic strategies (no more than 1 hour)

Get people to this blog article that you just wrote. There are so many social sites out there. Use them! You can let everyone know about your most recent blog post without having to go to every single social media site. Use the?free automated services?that allow you to send one post to several different social sites! Services like?Gremln, or HootSuite.?First, socialize your most recent post like crazy and then try any other way you can?increase your followers, subscribers, website traffic and popularity.

You are not done yet. This can become very addicting so make sure that you only spend an hour driving traffic after your post. If you want, you can come back to the driving traffic strategies in your spare time but for now you need to?move onto the next most important thing.

3. Focus on improving the overall quality of your site (1 hour)

This is very simple, make your site more appealing. Make it look more marketable or?contain more marketable treasures.

If you are just starting up your website, now is the time to find how you are going to make?your?site look. Find the plugins you want to use. Design your site in a way that draws your visitor?s attention on the things?you want them to focus on.

Work on creating a give away gift for those people who opt into your email list. Products and Ebooks that you can use within your site are born?little by little, day by day.

4. Clean up time. Do whatever is needed. (1-2 hours into free time)?

You have at least worked on the most important things you needed to get done. ?Now go back and work on whatever else you feel needs to be worked on.

Ask yourself,??how am I going to make money???Set up affiliate programs, and ways people can purchase your own creations online. Find ways to connect your MLM business to your site and then do it! If you are not involved with a MLM business then?get involved.?Schedule advertising?campaigns?or comment in your niches forums to create more traffic.

5. Connect with people! (During step 4 hours and whenever possible)

Even though you have an online business, this does?not mean you become a hermit?locked away from the outside world. It?s time to call, email and start meeting the people who have either connected with you or that are affiliated with your niche in some form or another.?This is a relationship business!?The more people trust you, the better off you will be. Period. You?ll make more money and receive countless numbers of people who?will know you?because of the relationships you?ve built through other people.

?

Here is a solid?8 hour day?of work! There is always something you can be doing.?Do not?get stuck spending your valuable time checking meaningless emails or your social sites over and over again because you?ve ?finished your work with your daily blog post? and don?t have anything else to do.?There?s always something that can be done!

P.S. If you have another job and you are also building your website then just spread these tasks through out a couple of days.?Come up with a plan that you can reach but also one that will push you.?Determine how many days a week you will publish a new post. Have specific days that these new posts will come out then?keep to your word.?Tell your readers which days you will have a new post out. Then on the other days you can spend more time driving traffic, becoming more popular, creating your very own products and monetizing your site.

Camps for, against Egypt president clash in Cairo

CAIRO (AP) ? For the first time since Egypt's new Islamist president took office, his supporters clashed with liberal and leftist protesters in Cairo, storming a stage erected by the opposition activists, smashing loudspeakers and tearing the structure down during competing rallies Friday.

The melee between supporters and opponents of President Mohammed Morsi reflects deep political divisions among the country's 82 million people, more than a year after the popular uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak.

Egyptians are struggling with a plunging economy, deteriorating security and disputes over the writing of the country's new constitution. They were also stunned by a verdict earlier this week that acquitted 25 Mubarak loyalists on charges of manslaughter and attempted murder during last year's revolt.

Liberal and leftist groups had called Friday's protest to demand more action from Morsi after his first 100 days in office. The liberals also want greater diversity on the panel tasked with writing Egypt's new constitution, which has been packed with Islamists, including members of Morsi's fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood.

Following calls for the protest, Morsi's supporters called for a separate rally to demand judicial independence following the acquittals of Mubarak loyalists Wednesday.

The former regime figures were acquitted of organizing the so-called "Camel Battle," ? an incident on Feb. 2, 2011, when assailants on horses and camels charged into crowds in Cairo protesting against Mubarak, leaving nearly a dozen people killed in the assault.

Around 1,000 protesters died across Egypt in the 18-day uprising that toppled Mubarak.

Friday's melee erupted after Morsi's supporters stormed the activists' stage at Cairo's Tahrir Square, angered by chants from the opposition they perceived as insults to the president.

Protesters were seen with bruises and scrapes as the two camps fought with fists and sticks. Gunshots were also fired.

Meanwhile, Morsi was in Egypt's second largest city, Alexandria, on Friday, where he pledged that former regime figures would be brought to justice despite Wednesday's verdicts.

He invoked the "martyrs of the revolution," including Khaled Said who died at the hands of Mubarak's police in Alexandria in 2010. Images of Said's severely disfigured face that had circulated widely online, helped galvanize calls for last year's uprising that eventually overthrew Mubarak, after nearly 30 years in power.

"All of the segments of Egypt's society were deprived of many rights" under Mubarak, Morsi told a crowd of supporters. "And the biggest right deprived of us was the right to freedom."

Following the acquittals of the 24, Morsi on Thursday dismissed the country's prosecutor general ? a Mubarak appointee ? in a bid to calm widespread anger. However, the prosecutor, Abdel-Maguid Mahmoud, refused to step down and vowed to remain in his post in defiance of Morsi citing a law that protects the prosecutor general from being ousted by the president.

Mubarak is serving a life sentence along with this longtime interior minister for failing to stop the killing of protesters last year.

After the clashes in Tahrir Square, the April 6 Movement, which played a significant role in bringing down Mubarak, said its supporters would march to the prosecutor's office and protest there instead.

Caught in the scuffles, Ashraf al-Said said he tried to calm both sides but instead found himself doused in white paint thrown onto the crowd.

"I am here with the revolution, the people and Egypt. I am not with anyone side," he said, his hands and hair dripping with white paint. "What we are doing now is a sin."

Sony VAIO Tap 20 (SVJ20215CXW)

The Sony VAIO Tap 20 (SVJ20215CXW) ($999.99 list) is a full-featured touch screen all-in-one desktop PC, with a little portability mixed in. For 99 percent of its use, you will be sitting in front of the Sony VAIO Tap 20 as if it were any other midrange all-in-one desktop PC. For the other 1 percent of the time, you can unplug the system, and it will continue to stay on and connected while you walk the system over to another room and plug it back in. Think of the VAIO Tap 20 as a transportable all-in-one desktop that you don't have to power down to move. It'll give you a small reserve of power while it's unplugged, but it's really meant to be plugged in to a power cord at all times. It's not anywhere near a "must buy" item at this time, but it works well enough that early adopters might want to give the new form factor and OS a try. At the very least it will help you get used to using Windows 8's touch interface while continuing to support older programs that you bought for your Windows 7 or Windows XP PC.

Design and Features
The Sony VAIO Tap 20 is small for an all-in one desktop, if a bit thick. It measures roughly 12 by 20 by 2 inches (HWD). Its dimensions are tempered by the fact that they are taken while the kickstand is fully deployed. When the kickstand is deployed, the Tap 20 extends back about 7 inches (alternately, two inches tall when lying flat). Other desktops like the Lenovo IdeaCentre A720 ($1,449 list, 4 stars) manage to ship with a really thin (0.75 inch) touchscreen, but that's because the A720's PC components are built into the base rather than into the screen like on the Vaio Tap. Most all-in-one desktops go for the HDTV aesthetic. The VAIO Tap 20 is trying to be noticed, with its white easel-style chassis, contrasting black bezel around a large 20-inch 1,600 by 900 resolution ten-finger multitouch screen. We wonder why Sony didn't just bite the bullet and design the VAIO Tap 20 with a 1,920 by 1,080 (full 1080p HD) screen, since that's what enthusiasts expect from their HD displays.

With its built-in battery, you might be temped to carry the VAIO Tap 20 like a tablet, though that's obviously not something Sony intended. Your arm will get tired quickly if you try to cradle the VAIO Tap 20 in one arm like a football, because of the system's 11-pound weight. As we'll see below in performance, the system is really designed to be carried from room to room and re-setup easily by plugging in the power cord. You could theoretically move the VAIO Tap 20 from room to room while the system is operating, You'll either have to keep several AC adapters in the various rooms of your house, or come back for the AC adapter after you move the Tap 20. It's more transportable than other all-in-one desktops, but make no mistake the VAIO Tap 20 is not a substitute for a laptop.

The VAIO Tap 20 boots into Windows 8's User Interface (UI), which was formerly known as Metro. You'll immediately see the initial tiles like Mail, Calendar, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft's app Store on the Start screen. You can bring up the Start screen at any time by pushing the physical Windows Key right under the screen. If you scroll the Start Screen to the right, you'll see Sony's contributions, including a full copy of ArtRage Studio Pro, VAIO Care, VAIO Message Center, Kaspery Internet Security (30-day trial), VAIO Update, and a VAIO Messaging organizer. You'll also find My Daily Clip, a program that feeds your system curated movie clips and links to buy movies and play games. There is a traditional desktop mode, but the old Start Menu with its convoluted folders system is gone, replaced by Win8 UI. Swiping the screen to navigate the UI is intuitive, particularly if you already own a smartphone or other tablet. The system's 1,600-by-900 resolution shortchanges you a bit when you're viewing HD videos, but it's fine when you're in desktop mode. Desktop mode is where you'll run older legacy programs for Windows 7 and earlier. As we've seen on the stock Acer Iconia W700-6465, user interface elements like close boxes and buttons in Desktop mode may look small in 1,920-by-1,080 resolution. We had no trouble opening and manipulating elements in both the Win8 and traditional desktop UI.

The VAIO Tap 20 comes with an Intel Core i5-3317U processor, Intel HD Graphics 4000, 4GB of DDR3 system memory, a 750GB 5,400rpm hard drive, and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. The VAIO Tap 20 has a full-sized built-in Ethernet port in addition to a pair of USB 3.0 ports, audio ports, and an SD/Memory Stick reader. Since Sony has the size, it might as well use the space. The feature set reminds us of an ultrabook laptop like the Samsung Series 9 15-inch (NP900X4C-A02US) ($1,500 list, 3.5 stars), which also has a Core i5-3317U, integrated Intel graphics, and a 1,600-by-900 screen. The Samsung Series 9 15-inch and other ultrabooks in this price range have smaller capacity (but fast) 128GB SSDs instead of the high capacity (but slow) 750GB spinning hard drive in the VAIO Tap 20.

The aforementioned kickstand lets you prop the system up like an all-in-one desktop, or lay it flat like a tablet so you can share the touch surface. The hinge holds the system up at any angle in between, so you can find one that lets you touch the screen comfortably. For example if you lean the system back at about a 70-degree angle, so you can use the onscreen keyboard easily. Alternately, you can pull it up a little more vertical for painting in ArtRage Pro on the screen with a finger, stylus, or even a capacitive paint brush for precision work. The last all-in-one that we reviewed that did touch screen ergonomics as well was the HP TouchSmart 620-1080 3D ($1,899 direct, 4 stars). The HP 620-1080 3D used a more elaborate hinge, slider, and braking mechanism that is more sturdy, but more complex than that of the VAIO Tap 20. The Vaio Tap 20 tilts at a wider range of angles with a simple kickstand. Think of it as an all in one PC with the functionality of an artists' tablet/screen like the Wacom Cintiq.

Performance
Sony VAIO Tap 20 (SVJ20215CXW) The VAIO Tap 20 is an all-in-one desktop form factor, but it has a battery and most of its internal components are notebook-class components. We recently revamped our benchmark tests for Windows 8, and since this is one of our first Windows 8 systems, comparison numbers are understandably scarce. The VAIO Tap 20 completed CineBench R11.5 with a score of 2.40 points, well in line with other Intel Core i5-3317U-powered systems like the Toshiba Portege Z935, the Editor' Choice for mainstream ultrabook, and the Vizio 15.6-inch Thin + Light (CT15-A1) . We weren't able to run PCMark 7 on the VAIO Tap 20, but we estimate that it will be a little slower than the Toshiba Z935 and Vizio CT15-A1 due to the ultrabooks using SSDs, while the VAIO Tap 20 uses a slower spinning hard drive.

Compared to other desktops, the Vaio Tap 20 is competitive with all-in-ones that also use low power, notebook-class Ivy Bridge processors with integrated graphics, like the Core i5-3210M in the Sony VAIO L24 (SVL24114FXB) ($1,399 list, 3.5 stars) . The Vaio L24 also had a CineBench score under 3 points (2.89 points). The Vaio L24 also got similar numbers in the 3DMark11 test, due to both systems sharing a common Intel HD Graphics 4000 architecture. That said, any system with a full-blown desktop processor and discrete graphics like the Apple iMac 21.5-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1,199 list, 4.5 stars) or Asus ET2701INKI-B046C ($1,399 list, 4 stars) will certainly be able to outclass the Vaio Tap 20 in all the benchmark tests. But then again, high-end performance isn't the Vaio Tap 20's calling.

The VAIO Tap 20's 3D prowess is understandably low. The system only managed a slideshow-like 5 fps on the Aliens Vs. Predator and Heaven benchmarks at native resolution with the quality settings maxed out. Our mid-level Heaven test was also slow: 13 fps isn't really playable. That said, simpler games like Torchlight and browser games should look fine on the Vaio Tap 20.

Since the VAIO Tap 20 has a battery in it, we decided to test it. We ran a video rundown test on the system as if you were unplugging to watch a movie on your patio. Running our standard 10-hour video file, we were able to watch for one hour, forty-eight minutes with the brightness turned up to max and the Wi-Fi radio on (but not actively streaming data). This is barely enough for a summer blockbuster (sans credits), but it should be enough battery time for your average children's movie. The battery is good for keeping the system active while you transport it 40 feet from room to room, but as we've been saying, it's not useful for an extended computing session unplugged.

So, after all that, the Sony VAIO Tap 20 is definitely an innovative design, in the realm of systems like the Apple iMac 21.5-inch (Thunderbolt), Lenovo IdeaCentre A720, and the HP TouchSmart 620-1080 3D. The comparison is apt particularly with the HP 620-1080 3D, since both that and the VAIO Tap 20 lean far back for easier touch-screen use. The VAIO Tap 20 is closer in price to the Apple iMac and more mainstream systems like the Toshiba LX835-D3230 ($999 list, 3.5 stars) and our current midrange Editor's Choice, the Asus ET2701INKI-B046C. The Asus ET2701INKI is simply a better desktop all around, including features and performance. Even the Toshiba LX835 is a better featured all-in-one desktop for the time being. The VAIO Tap 20 is an innovative all-in-one desktop with extra portability, but there are better-featured and more powerful desktops for just a little more money.

Author of the Week: Dr Francisco Fernandez Trillo ? Polymer ...

I obtained my degree in Chemistry in 1998 from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), where I specialised in Organic Chemistry. At the same university I undertook postgraduate studies and obtained a PhD in 2004. Under the supervision of Prof Susana L?pez Est?vez, I developed the total synthesis of several marine natural polyacetylenes with important biological properties. After that, I moved to the field of polymer chemistry and I joined the group of Prof Neil Cameron at the University of Durham (UK) in 2005. As part of the EU training network ?SmashyBio?, we worked on the development of highly porous materials for the reversible immobilisation of biomolecules. In 2006, I returned to the University of Santiago de Compostela to work with Profs Ricardo Riguera and Eduardo Fernandez-Megia, on the development on novel dendrimeric materials for applications at the chemistry-biology interface. Since october 2009, I have been working as a research fellow in the Division of Drug Delivery and Tissue Engineering, working on the development on novel polymeric materials for drug delivery and synthetic biology.

Web-Page: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/pharmacy/people/francisco.fernandez-trillo

What was your inspiration in becoming a chemist?

I have always found inspiration from the people that are close to me or that I know. In that regard, the first person that ?inspired? me to do chemistry was my mother, a chemist by training. Not only her example convinced me to do chemistry, but she has shown me the value of responsibility and hard work. In addition, through the years, I have tried to learn from the people around me, not only from my supervisors and mentors, but from the many talented co-workers and collaborators I have had the privilege to work with.

What was the motivation to write?your Polymer Chemistry?article? (DOI: 10.1039/C2PY20352A )

In our research group we are very interested in developing novel self-assembled materials for their application in different fields such as drug delivery, tissue culture, imaging or synthetic biology. For some of these applications, developing robust particles that can stand the different conditions that can be found for instance in the body, is of extreme importance. In this regard, polymeric vesicles offer great versatility as the properties can be tailored by a careful selection of monomers and polymerisation techniques.

Why did you choose Polymer Chemistry to publish your work?

Polymer Chemistry has become the reference journal for the synthesis of polymeric materials. Most of the key research groups in the area report their work here, and therefore we felt it was the natural journal to report ours.

In which upcoming conferences may our readers meet you?

In the next couple of months, I will be speaking at the ACS meeting in Philadelphia and the UKPhamsci conference in Nottingham, about our recent work in the development of novel antibacterial polymers.

How do you spend your spare times?

Well, like one of my former supervisors used to say in his webpage, I have 2 kids and therefore no time for luxuries such as hobbies. The truth is that I like to spend my spare time with my family, as work in academia already takes a lot of my time. Other things that I am happy to do in my spare time are reading a nice book/comic, enjoying a conversation over a pint at the pub, and like any good spaniard, discussing over a nice meal.

Which profession would you choose if you were not a scientist?

I have never gave much thought to what would I be if I was not a scientist. What I am sure is that it will have to be something creative, and probably in the engineering or technology area, as I have no talent for arts.

NEW YORK (AP) ? It was an ad campaign conceived as eye candy to bring attention to other advertisements in New York's transit system. But the "Meet Miss Subways" beauty contest posters of pretty young New York women and their aspirations quickly evolved into a popular and even groundbreaking fixture that ran for 35 years, from 1941 to 1976.

When photographer Fiona Gardner first learned about it she "immediately wanted to know what happened to all the women."

She set out to find out.

The result is "Meet Miss Subways: New York's Beauty Queens 1941-76," an exhibition at the New York Transit Museum running Oct. 23-March 25, and a companion book of the same name.

The contest reflected an evolving America. When it was launched, the war already was changing the role of women. From 1952 to 1962, the contest featured schoolteachers, stewardesses and suburban housewives; the next 10 years saw secretaries and airplane pilots.

The first African-American was crowned Miss Subways in 1948 ? long before Vanessa Williams was named Miss America in 1984 ? and the first Asian-American was honored in 1949.

"It was the first integrated and ethnically diverse beauty contest in America," representing working-class women, said Gardner, who was born the year the contest ended. "I realized I had stumbled on a piece of forgotten New York history."

Her interest was piqued in 2004 after seeing some of the original posters on the walls of Ellen's Stardust Diner, whose owner Ellen Hart Sturm was crowned Miss Subways in 1959. The winners' future dreams were listed along with their headshots; many wanted to be models or singers, while others yearned to travel ? "Europe four times, no less," read the Miss Subways poster of Maureen Walsh Roaldsen in 1968. The first Miss Subways, Mona Freeman, even went on to become a movie star after being discovered by Howard Hughes.

But for most, the subway placard was their only moment in the spotlight, and finding the former winners was a challenge for Gardner. The contest archives were lost. Many of the women had married and changed their names, some had moved, still others had died.

She searched the Internet, voter registration and municipal archives and even hired a private eye. With journalist Amy Zimmer, she tracked down 146 Miss Subways posters and interviewed 41 winners in person. Together they collaborated on the book, with Gardner taking the women's portraits wearing their Miss Subways sashes at home or at work.

"Many of these women are very interesting and have accomplished many things. You realize there's a much more complex story behind the headshots. Many of them went back and had second and third careers," said Gardner.

Marcia Kilpatrick Hocker's dream to study with the Negro Ensemble Company repertory theater came true. She auditioned after becoming Miss Subways in 1975, calling the contest "very confidence-boosting."

"I'm basically very shy. ... I didn't know I would be representing Miss Subways at various functions, speaking at kickoff events, addressing school groups," the 65-year-old Hocker said in a telephone interview from Gresham, Ore., where she now lives.

She wanted to be Miss Subways because she "wanted to be discovered. I wanted to do commercials and be an actress," Hocker said.

She married an American diplomat in 1981 and lived for a time in Colombia and New Zealand. She put her talents to use, singing at embassy functions and coaching American children in drama. For the past 11 years, she's been a DJ at Jazz Radio KMHD in Portland.

For the first 22 years, winners were selected by the John Robert Powers modeling agency and the New York Subways Advertising Company. Afterward, it became a more democratic contest, with straphangers voting via postcard for their favorite finalist.

Changing times including the women's movement, the city's fiscal crisis and rampant graffiti in the transit system brought an end to the contest.

Only 17 when she won, Sturm's poster said she wanted to pursue an acting career and devote all her spare time to acting, singing and speech lessons.

"For a while I was known as the national anthem singer," the 71-year-old said. In the 1980s Sturm sang The Star-Spangled Banner for the Knicks and Rangers games as one of Madison Square Garden's rotating singers. She also sang at official city functions.

She married and had two sons. Her retro 1950s-themed restaurant opened in 1987, featuring singing waiters and 70 Miss Subways posters. She also stages Miss Subways reunions at the diner.

Roaldsen, 67, a 1968 winner, is coming to the next one Nov. 13 for the book's launch party.

She was 23 and working as a secretary at Downstate Medical Center when she won. On weekends, she greeted VIPs and celebrities at the Diamond Club at Shea Stadium.

As Miss Subways she represented New York. Among the perks was attending Richard Nixon's inauguration and going to the premier of "Finian's Rainbow" at the Ziegfeld Theatre, where she briefly met Fred Astaire.

She married and continued to travel, her passion. In her 40s she launched a new career as an attorney for the New York State Appellate Court.

It wasn't a real beauty contest, said Hocker. "It was about a well-groomed young woman who in addition to wanting to be a wife and mom, had aspirations to do something to contribute to the community at large."
