Whats the skiing like?
Its generally considered to be brilliant for beginners and pretty good for intermediate and advanced. Real novices wont be disappointed either as there are plentiful nursery slopes and tuition centres. Real experts and adrenalin-junkies might prefer to use the resort as a base to explore the more demanding slopes available in the wider area once they have arrived on their transfer from Geneva to Chatel, as it is part of the famous Portes du Soleil. There are also plentiful boarding opportunities and other snow sports.
Who goes there?
Typically its seen as a family and couples resort. The emphasis is on good fun, good facilities and value for money. Its not normally regarded as a resort for those wanting to merely be seen or where the rich and famous go to pose. In summer, it is very popular with people that enjoy mountain sports, hiking and cycling/biking etc. The scenery is stunning and also great for exploring local flora and fauna etc.
Is this a purpose-built resort?
Well, yes and no! The village and community go back centuries and maintain a traditional farming aspect that may never have existed in some resorts, and which in others may have been lost. The centre is pretty and composed of traditional or traditional-style buildings. Of course, much of the resort accommodation, facilities and infrastructure are modern and built relatively recently to develop and progress the skiing and summer tourist industries. Overall, its regarded as a destination with some charm.
How do I get there?
Air routes and transfers might be available from centres such as Lyon and Chambery, though Geneva is regarded as the main hub. The transfer from Geneva to Chatel should take about 1.5 hours on average, or perhaps a little more at peak times.
Access is also possible by train and road.
What is the Portes du Soleil?
It is a large geographical region where a number of French and Swiss ski resorts have joined together to form what is widely regarded as the worlds largest area of linked ski and snow activities. Its possible to ski from one to another and across the national border. It offers an incomparable variation of skiing opportunities.
What else is there to do here?
The nightlife here is much more vibrant and exciting than is the case in some other French alpine resorts. It retains a very French culture but bars, pubs and clubs might be open until 4am. Theres a very good selection of local and international restaurants, plus the usual options of swimming pools and other forms of entertainment. So, in a nutshell, its worth taking the transfer from Geneva to Chatel and spending a holiday there unless you really want major posing opportunities of course!
